By GEORGE WELLER TAY-NINH, Southern Indo-China, May 30 (CON)—A | modern army with mortars and machineguns, answering to .a religion of spiritistic seances, is the strangest newcorher| to the war against communism in Indo-China.
‘ The army belongs to the Cao-| daists, a sect composed of the! faiths of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism and Confucianism. In thé
southern Indo- ° China, once ruled by the Communist Viet Minh, the gentle Cao- | daists have 7 raised an army 4 of 20,000 that has cleansed Ka | their villages of { Reds, Mr. Weller Formerly antiFrench because the French exiled one of their popes to Madagascar; the godly Caodaists have mow swung around and are fighting a local war against communism. “We are working for the absence of the French and the annihilation of the Viet Minh Communists,” a close-cropped Caodaist monk told me. Caodaism, a 27-year-old religion of borrowings, was born of the supernatural craze after World War I and the experiments stemming from Conan Doyle, Houdini and Ouija.
