play The plays you make when you have a fine partner like Mr. Mas- = fers. may ‘not fit the situa. tion where you are sitting across the table from Mr, Muy. e today’s deal for examPle. Against the four spade contract, Mr. Muzzy led the ace of diamonds. While the chances for winning another diamond trick appeared excellent, Mr. Champion decided not to encourage continuation of the suit at this point. In other words he played the discouraging deuce,

HE MADE" this play in the desperate hope that he could get Mr. Muzzy to shift to the ace and another club, Mr, Champion would ruff the second club and cash the king of diamonds for the setting trick. Mr. Muzzy shifted all right. He shifted to the nine of hearts. Dummy’s queen won and Mrs. Abel took two rounds of trumps. He cashed the ace of hearts, felling dummy’s king, followed with the jack of hearts on which dummy’s last diamond was discarded. Now he ruffed a diamond on the board, re-

and had nothing left but clubs. There was no way to prevent Mr. Abel from winning a trick with the king of clubs. There is no use putting a strain on a weak partner, Mr. Champion's best bet was to play the jack of diamonds at trick one. He could have won the

king and relaxed. Eventually, Mr." Abel would have had to losé two club tricks. Actually, the deuce of diamonds play was no good technically, either, It was not a suit preference signal-because that signal does not apply unless a shift is definitely indicated, as where there is a singleton in dummy. But with two diamonds on the board, a shift was not clearly indicated and the deuce play meant only that Mr, Champion was not interested in diamonds.

DESIGN A PNW TOUR MAZE

: HERS. £2 Sweet) Designing a maze is even more fun than working one. This is picnic season, so why not design a possible picnie tour, drawing in all of the things that could happen when you go on a family picnic, get lost, run out of gas, or even

have a flat tire, Too, you can draw in all the points of interest that you might see along the way, in fact, this can be a picture map,

is fun to draw a maze which is nothing more than a very complicated maze with blind roads, and roads where you

must retrace your steps.

One Dad I knew used to draw a maze each night before sons went to bed. They followed this maze with colored

pencils. Each month the mazes became more complicated,

and new methods were used. Finally the boys turned the table on their Dad. They drew the maze for their Dad to follow. Try it.
