the street, but the Indianapolis West 16th Street Midget

Speedway is famous too. It is

recognized the country over as’

one of the fastest quarter-mile asphalt ovals. The track is the scene of the National AAA midget championship. races, six of which are run during the season. It is also the scene three times weekly of stock car races, often referred to as “jalopy races.”

This type of racing is usually |

frowned on by the big time race drivers who are often prone to forget they started in the game under similar circumstance. But frowned on or not, none can deny the little 16th Street track has played a big part in the development of the passenger car you drive. s = =

TIRES AND body parts of cars go under a tremendous strain

. ‘negotiating the short turns at

high speeds. Many defects have been found because of these type races, defects that when corrected improved the safety of the car you drive. Virtually all the drivers who appear in the 500-Mile classic drive midget cars during the summer and so at one time or another during the summer months they will put in an appearance at the local track. But auto raging isn’t the only sports event that plays the West 16th Street Midget Speedway. It has been the scene of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus, wrestling and boxing matches, bicycle races and football games. = o s

THE BIGGEST single event at the track is the gala race night May 29th before the 500. This

year three separate race events ‘will be run,

Starting at 2 in the afternoon will be a stock car race. This will be followed by the first of the sea-

son’s National 100-lafFAAA Midget Championship races. And the last race, starting somewhere

around midnight will be another stock car race.

2700 Feet of Bricks

There are 2700 feet of~brick track on the main straightawa$ that is vacuum-swept each 500Mile Race. The remainder of the track is cleaned with rotary brushes,
