Carving Car Was Big Project
SCALED DOWN—Duke Nalon's 1950 car and pit oauipment have & twin in the above 13. inch model made by Bill Cale. Since that time the race car has become the Pure Oil Special.

- Nalon’s 1950 car wasn't im-
possible, but was a long project. Entered in the Athenaem Turners’ annual hobby shows in both 1951 and 1952, the race car took first place both times.
Since 1946 Bill has seen each 500 Mile Race and chose Duke Nalon as his favorite. Besides visiting the track frequently, Bill collected newspaper shots of the car taken at various angles and took his own pictures to supplement the collection.
When school was out in 1950, Bill sorted his picture collection and co-ordinated his information on the racer before beginning his model. He started with a block of balsam wood with the profile of the racer drawn on the side. After an operation with a jig saw, the final touches were put on with a knife and emery paper. Auto _duplicolor, used to re-

touch cars, was used to paint the Novi, since it fills in the wood pores and gives the best gloss.
= » » BILL USED ingenuity and ordinary household objects for the detail work on his model. Louvres are really staples. A coathanger strip became a bumper. Exhausts are made from dowel rods. The tires are standard gasoline model airplane tires with the tread ground off and white ink used to give the official “Firestone” look of authenticity. Axels were made from two metal rods with threads on the ends. Wing caps are ordinary machine nuts with plastic strips gued on to give the appearance of the real part. Bill cut the top lip off a 35 millometer film can to / make brake drums. A wire bent into a circle, secured with scotch tape and wrapped with thread size fine wire became a steering wheel.

month and a half to complete. Bill is currently a freshman at Butler University studying business _administration.
