SOUTH PACIFIC EFFECT—Cane and bamboo motifs on driftwood mahogany. By JEAN SPICKLEMIRE

Times

Editor

THE INFORMALITY of the South Seas keys a new line of modern furniture. It's the Bali-Hi grouping, made by the American Furniture Co. of Martinsville and sold here by Banner-

Whitehill’s. Originated by Merton L. Gershun, one of the country’s foremost designers, the pieces are simply styled. Yet any severity is played down by the use of two island characteristics— simulated cane and bamboo trims.

‘Note how the latter motif breaks the otherwise stark Jines of the china cabinet pictured in the dining room setting. Mr, Gershun created Bali-Hi with contemporary homes in mind. He gave it low, free lines for an uncluttered effect even in the smallest areas, There's no hardware to mar the elean look. Drawers have finger holds at the sides, and they are permanently treated to prevent swelling or sticking. n 5 s THE WOOD 18 driftwood mahogany, a color that has undertones of brown. Thus the

dark pieces a homemaker already owns, Included in the group are 26 pieces, enough to correlate bedroom, living room and dining room. Banner's stocks the bedroom and dining furnishings, will order the living room ones.

The upholstered section of the latter is done in an outstanding linen-like fabric called Pleces of Eight. Dining chairs come covered in.the same design so they may be used in either of the other rooms. The material is sold by the yard, too, so a homemaker can coordinate bedspreads and draperies if she so desires.

There are many dual purJoss pieces; thus a small budget ay expand at will. And Mr. Gershun's skill has injected a number of high style factors that both add to the line's utility and increases its fashionable traits. w -
