Junk Can

By HUBBARD COBB We got a letter the other day! from a reader who dried out his| basement ‘and it didn’t cost him a/ a nickel, This is how he did it. First, he cleaned out all the) junk. The idea behind this was

that if the junk was out of the| =

way, alr could circulate in the basement. What he found out after he got started was a lot of that junk was helping to keep the basement damp. For example, a few bundles of old papers con-

men at 99 for the next 10 years. Some old rugs didn't help and neither ‘did some rotting timbers he'd stored away 10 years ago. After the junk was out of the way he removed a lot of old plaster from one wall because the plaster was damp and didn’t look too well anyway. The old hedvy coating of whitewash on one wall got the same treatment. After all this he scrubbed the place down with plain warm water and, a little cleaning powder. | Now he waited until he had a nice warm dry day with a little breeze blowing and he opened all the basement windows. Some of the shrubs around a few windows had to be cut back a little to allow for a maximum amount of ventilation. He placed an ordinary portable electric fan on a stepladder in the basement in front of on2 window and let the fan and the air do the work. By the end of the day the basement was not only dry but it smelt nice too. This reader figures that by not using his basement as a junk yard and by giving it a little fresh air in nice weather he’ll be able to keep it nice and dry all year around.

can do a lot toward keeping your refrigerator going by keeping it happy. Be sure that the rubber gasket around the door is in good condition, If it is worn it allows hot air tocenter the ice compartment

and this keeps the works running

almost constantly. Another thing

to watch for is opening the door Strike Gas Deposit

umteen times a day, Each time the door is opened, even if only for a second, a blast of hot air gets inside to start things going again. Do a little

advance planning so that several.

items are removed or replaced at one time so that the door is only opened a minimum number of times daliy.

It’s very bad to pack a refrig-! erator too full of food for this; will’ cut down the circulation of! cold air in the freezing compart-|

ment and make the cooling .unit work just that much harder, If you find your compartment packed tight full you need a larger refrigerator. " Be sure that the motor is properly oiled and the belt between motor and cooling unit is neither too tight nor too loose. Either one causes the metor to overwork.
