By ART WRIGHT THIS IS the biggest week of the year for Indianapolis’ W. 16th St. Midget Speedway. Tonight, as usual, it’s the stock cars.

* Starting Wednesday the starts on the quarter-mile oval across from the 500-Mile track. When the;stock cars race Wednesday night the roughneck drivers will battle for the state championship. The feature event, for the title, will be 50 laps. It's in addition to the regular program of sprints. The BIG DAY is Thursday, the day before the “500.” Activity Thursday starts with ‘qualifying trials for stock cars at 1 p. m. At 2:30 the stock car sprint races begin. At 8 p. m. midget race fans will start getting their thrills... when qualification trials open for the first AAA midget go of the season at W. 16th St. The first race will start at 9 p. m. The big attraction for the midget classic will be the 100Lap Golden Jubilee Champion- | ship event. Sprints will precede the century run. The “big name” drivers will be there. . ® o MIDGET FANS from all over the nation will see this one. Five fan clubs have bought blocks of reserved seats to provide a cheering section “for their favorites. The fan clubs will be presented with large checkered flags to be autographed by drivers. They

“will be the gift of Randall

Mitchell,’ track manager. Although there has been a big advance sale of reserved seats for the.midget races . . , you still| can get choice locations. How-| ever, we'd suggest you call the| W. 16th St. Midget Speedway in & hurry to be sure of the best. Because of the record crowd indicated, it looks like the track will pay the biggest purse of any quarter-mile track in the past two years. The purse is determined by a percentage of the gate. Fans who like to “make a night of it” will find more speed activity at the quartermile oval at-1 a. m. Friday

No qualifications on race da “Ihe big league drivers will race for a purse of $15,000 or 40 per cent of the gate, whichever is the larger. This should be a thriller, The track is brand new. It’s north of Raleigh on U. 8. highways 1 and 1-A. It's a one mile, banked course with macadam surface. The turns are banked at 45 degrees and elevated 14 feet high. That current story about Henry Banks in the current issue of Saturday Evening Post: (May 24) is a honey. Writer Harold M. Martin has caught the “feel” of racing . . . and his wordage sits you right down in the pit area with the drivers. It's a grand job on racing few writers accom-

W. P. MITCHELL, optical manufacturer of Waynesville, Mo., has sent us a pair of NiteLite driving glasses to see how the race drivers would like them. Says they will maintain clearer vision under all conditions of {llumination , . . and lense can be fitted into any type goggles. They seem jim-dandy to us, especially for night highway driving. Work okeh for TV viewing, too. The “exhaust gas” is there's been a rift in NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) . .. . that a split in the ranks will eliminate NASCAR from everything except the mile and half-mile tracks, where they can get em. @alk, too, is that at least nine top drivers of NASCAR are trying to get into the AAA ranks, ~ Ed » AN ALL -HOOSIER song for the biggest of all Hoosier events

is getting popular reception again this 500 Race season. It's “Speed-

way Romance,” words by Doro-

thy R. Newlett and music by Betty R. Witte, both from Indianapolis. It's available on sheet music stands and at record shops. It was recorded on Hoosier label put out- by RCA here, by Denny Dutton’s (Club LaRue) Band, vocal by Indianapolis’ Tom Berry. Last year record sales were some 2500,. sheet music over 3000 copfes. , . . and it looks like 1952 should be better. The lyrics are about “boy meets girl” at the big race. Ever buy a boat without the oars? One of the national auto racing publications is earrying this advertisement: “For Sale, Famous Ted Horn Championship Car, less engine and rear end” Maybe you could propel it with sajla.

THIS ISN'T kidding: Milt Marion, veteran of the. Eastern tracks and the Indianapolis Speedway, has all of his racing equipment for sale, Has to get out because of ill health which overtook him months ago. He's at the “500” Speedway now.
