BLOOMINGTON, May

‘Opera Workshop version of Mozart's “Abduction from the

Seraglio” is an amazingly good show. Opening its two performances in East Hall tonight,

this early Mozart item looks and

sounds charming. It’s another achievement of the Ernst Hoff man-Hans Busch team,

with technical assistance from “Robert Burns Stevens. And I ‘might say here the planning of

Numerous Mentions As is customary in Dean Wil--

fred C. Bain's School of Music, there's maximum student participation in this project. Consequently, mentions will have to be numerous, They also will have to be understood as comments on

the show as of its preview Tuesafternoon, when of jionor were Metropolitan Opera personnel. (The Met visitors applauded enthusiastically, then went on to do another Mozart item, “Cosi fan tutte,” in the evening. — + Stellar performer is Vera Scammon, singing Constanza. With clear, true voice, easy facility in B= passages and a great deal of stage charm, Mrs. Scammon {Tuesday got and deserved a lot i applause.

8 Share Key Role

Three temors are sharing the | Belmonte role: Jack De Lon, Guy Piche and George McKinley. (Mr. McKinley, you may recall, was one of the soloists for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir's May Festival last Saturday.) Mr. De Lon seems to me to have the most promising operatic voice, though he flats now and then. Mr. Piche has nice sympathic warmth in his singing, but Tuesday sounded strained at times. Mr. McKinley did adequately in both ‘singing and acting. 1 heard only one of the sopranos singing the role of Constanza's maid, Blonde: Elizabeth Kelle. She did some quite beautiful col-| oratura singing, with nice understanding of tone and volume. As Pedrillo in especially slap-| stick scenes, John Borneman did! some exceedingly funny stuff. He had the better spots, and hence seemed more effective than the other Pedrillo, Jerry Reinhart. Donald Vogel and James Ser-| viss are a good pair of Osmins. Dan Wrzesien, impressive as the Pasha; Werner Graf, as a Boats-| man, and Maurice Allard, as aj very comical Mute, have amusing bit parts.

Perales was arrested for violating a two-year suspended sentence by failing to get a job and hanging around taverns. He was being transferred to county jail with another prisoner when the other man made a break for freedom, While deputies chased and captured the fugitive, Perales waited patiently in front of the court. house until they returned. The judge decided not to revoke the sentence suspension,
