By EDDIE ASH
Brews Are Both Ahead And Behind the Blues
BASEBALL percentage is playing a mean trick on the Kansas City Blues . . . The league-leading Milwaukee Brewers are half a game behind in “games behind” figures but are three points ahead in the percentage column. It surely would be rough on a team to lose a pennant under similar circumstances, but it has happened, believe it or don’t, in the minor leagues . . . The Blues have won three more games than the Brewerytown boys, but the fact they have lost two more and have played five more trips them up in multiplication. Percentage is the determining factor in baseball standings, not the GB (games behind) figures . . . Kansas City fans probably are wondering what it takes to get a team out in front... and you can’t blame them, as excited and thrilled as they are over their fine team. To find a club standing divide number of games won (adding decimal point and three ciphers) by total number of games played ... Where teams are so close the three percentage figures show an apparent tie, extend division to four or none figures . . . Wherever the fraction is one-half or more beyond the usual three figures of the
decimal, a whole, or one, is given. =” » ” . - »
It pays minor leaguers to bear down and go all-out whenever they oppose major league teams in exhibition games . Several days ago, on an open date for both clubs, the New York Yankees journeyed to Kansas City and met the Blues in an exhibition attraction . . . Blues’ Pitcher Bill Miller was given the job of turning back the parent club . . . That he did . .
He beat the Yanks, 3 to 1, before a crowd of more than 14,000 +. The achievement brought a quick promotion . . . Last night
the rookie was called up by the defending world’s champions. " » ” = = -
BARRING the 500-mile race interlude, the Indianapolis Indians’ second home stand, starting tomorrow night, vs. the Columbus Red Birds, calls for seven American Association clubs to visit the wigwam, plus the parent Cleveland Indians in an exhibition attraction with their Hoosier Triple-A farm club . . . The game scheduled with
Toledo on Monday has been postponed to make room for |
the appearance of Al Lopez’ big leaguers. Columbus will be first on the scene, a single tilt tomorrow and a twin bill Sunday afternoon . .. Then Cleveland on Monday night . .. A twi-night doubleheader is to be played with Toledo on Tuesday, first game at 6:30... It will be Toledo again on Wednesday and then Louisville on Thursday, eve of the 500-mile race . : . The Indians are booked in Louisville on Memorial Day and Saturday, the 31st. ’ » . »
» . » The Tribesters will double back home on Sunday, June 1, for a doubleheader with St. Paul to set off the second invasion of the American Association's western clubs . . . After a threegame series with the Saints, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Milwaukee will invade in the order named, through Sunday, June 8 . . . Several changes in player personnel have been made since the completion of the Tribe's first home stand . . , in the mound staff, on the infield and in the outfield . . , While the team has been away Manager Gene Desautels has
come close to shaking hands with a new player a day. s
- - s - » FRANK HILL retires next month after 32 years as track coach at Northwestern University . . . He was given a farewell dinner last night at the Evanston University Golf Club where more than 200 old friends and admirers assembled . . . Hill says the ideal coach should possess, among other attributes, technical knowledge; a sense of humor and lots of patiepce . . . characteristics of Knute Rockne, among others, in college football. Coach Hill developed many fine teams and individual champions in the Big Ten down through the years . ..
country runner asked whether Hill had any last-minute instructions . . . “Hurry back,” said the coach. = " ” » » » Don Gutteridge, the Indianapolis Indians’ manager last year, seldom saw luck break in his favor while guiding the Redskins around the American Association . . . Some of that bad luck followed him to Colorado Springs, where he is managing the Skysox in the Class A Western League, a Chicago White Sox affiliate . . . Here's an example . . . Floyd Penfold,
high-priced bonus baby placed under Gutteridge’s wing by the :
parent White Sox, pitched a three-hit game for Colorado Springs the other night . . . but lost.

After tonight's double duty, the Indians will hurry home to meet the Columbus Red Birds at Viec[tory Field Saturday night and in la doubleheader Sunday afternoon
optioned to the Indians by the parent Cleveland Indians, is slated to pitch the Saturday night game in Indianapolis. Skippér Desautels also indicated that Bob Chakales, who “came down” with Zuverink, will work in one of Sunday's games against the Red Birds. The games at Swayne Field to{night will end the Indians’ long jroad trip. in which they have visited six cities. They had no luck in the American Association's western sector, winning but one game and losing eight. Then on to Columbus, where they captured the only tilt played. That adds up to two wins and eight setbacks on the marathon journey. » ® » MANAGER DESAUTELS said, “We could have used some rain {and postponements in the West, {but none came, except a single |rainout at Milwaukee. Now, when we invade the East and with the team showing signs of coming back to life, the clouds open up and keep us tied down in the hotel lobby.” Last night's postponement was the second for the Indians in three days. They were rained out in Columbus Tuesday.
HERE MONDAY NIGHT— Larry Doby, one of the best flychasers in the major leagues today, will be in the center field spot for the Cleveland Indians Monday night when the parent club comes to Victory Field to " meet the Indianapolis Indians ! in an exhibition game.

NEW YORK. May 23 23—Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick said today the House Monopoly Committee did a “comprehensive job” Investigating the sport, but points ed out its report is so long a hure ried analysis cannot be made. “It is a report that must be studied in detail before baseball people can draw definite conclu sions,” Frick said. ; : The Celler committee, headed by Rep, Emanuel Celler (D.
