Hopes Turned to Ashes

By United Press

DAYTON, O., May 22—A handful of white ashes was all that remained today of the $43,550 Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. White worked 27 years to save. A bent-pin found among the ashes in a trash barrel confirmed their fears that their life savings was among trash which Mrs. White burned Tuesday night. It was the same pin she had used to ‘attach to her slip a plain muslin bag in which they had kept their savings “for years.” Mr. White, a 47-year-old machinist, was a broken man. “I'm lost; I'm a loser,” he said. “Everything's gone and I'm broke. I'm hurt too doggoned bad to talk about it.” His wife, also 47, had planned to put the money in a bank Tuesday while taking "her lunch hour from the five-and- ten- cent

store where she works. The bank was crowded; she decided to come Rack later.

Detectives who investigated ‘said they |

saw what appeared to be the corner of a $100 bill among the ashes.

They took the small white pile of ashes

for safe-keeping but Detective Lt. C. W. Martz said it was “problematical whether the money can be checked.” Mr. White said he did not plan to file a claim with the Treasury Department. He said he would leave that up to the police. The Whites have a modest home here. Their furniture is plain. Neither drinks or smokes and they seldom go to even a movie. About their only luxury is a television set.

“Sometimes I think a body shouldn't even try to live, n Mr. White said.

The 50-year-old machinist has developed a calkgulating machine designed to beat a roulette wheel, and he says it helped him take $300 from a Las Vegas, Nev. gambling house in two and a half hours last week end. The gadget is a small box with a 12-key calculator and six meters. Mr. May says the machine can determine which sets of numbers on a roulette wheel are due to start coming up, and ail he has to do ig bet them.

Law of Averages

Mr. May watches several turns of a wheel before he begins betting himself. When the ball stops on a number, he punches a key on his machine and sets a computer. “It works strictly by the law of averages,” he explained. “The machine over a long period of time reduces the element of chance by eliminating from consideration columns and sections that already have hit.” Mr. May records 18 to 20 spins
