The Stork and You—
Driving More Risky Than Having Baby
NOTE: This is the fourth of a series about children:by a mother of your youngsters. The chapters are from the book, “The Stork and You,” just published by the Westminster Press.
By JOAN YOUNGER HOW dangerous is childbirth? ' The possibility of death or injury used to be something to worry about. Women had their babies too fast; they weren't given prenatal care, babies were delivered at home
without any equipment more special ‘than a pot of boiling
water and a midwife. They had no miracle drugs, such as penicillin, to use if infection set in.
About nine out of 10 women now have their babies in hospitals—and most hospitals are equipped with oxygen tanks, blood -- tanks, miracle drugs, surgical tools, and, last but not least, expert obstetricians. : Today only- one mother in 2000 dies in childbirth — and that figure includes mothers whose babies first see the light of day in backwoods cabins, taxicabs, cold-water tenements and fruit orchards. : Of those who go to the hospital, only one in about 3000 dies. So you can see that your chances of dying for your child are slim indeed. All told, it's much more dangerous to go driving than it is to have a baby. = ” ¥ BUT EVEN SO painful? Yes, it is—but how much so depends on how much you feel pain or how you react to it. Perhaps you're the kind who feels it is really nothing at all to have a tooth extracted. Or perhaps, while you don't really mind pain itself, you're nervous and tense and likely to scream when you're threatened with any kind of operation — even the idea of having a splinter removed upsets you. Whatever your type, face it and tell your doctor. He will tell you what you can expect at what stage, he ‘will be there when he's most needed, and will be guided by your reactions

ably the biggest event in my life and I didn't want to be asleep when it happened. I was
utterly fearless. I wanted to know everything and see everything. My doctor was a very pleasant person and indulgent. He stayed pretty close to me through labor and described the activities that were taking place inside of me. 1 was quite surprised to find that it hurt, but I stuck it out. When he delivered my baby, he held, her up and showed her to me, spanking her as he’did it. r Hs.
TODAY, MANY women have their babies through the yrantly Dick Read method— commonly called “natural childbirth” —without any anesthesia. This method is more than just knowing what is happening and relaxing, it is working at it. Preparation includes a series of breathing and relaxing exercises all through pregnancy, the full co-operation of your doctor and a rather extensive knowledge of what birth is. It has as its reward a fuller experience of delivery and birth than the mother who is anesthetized gets—you hear your baby's first cry and see him fresh from your body. Dr. Grantley Read has done one great service for all womankind: He has focussed attention on how normal the activity of childbirth is; how much easier it is to put up with it when you understand. Whether you use the Read method or not, it's well worth while to talk to your doctor about it as well as about methods employing anesthesia.
" un n I¥ YOU'RE like me, you'll want your husband around
while you're ‘having your baby. My husband is calm where I am flurried; patient where I am impatient; full, of strength where I am weak. It's wonderful to have him around-.at any time, but especially when I'm having a baby.

“WE FILL the gaps.” That's the short way Mrs. Felix J. Brown, Indiana Department, American Legion Auxiliary hospital representative, describes the services of Legion Auxiliary volunteers in the new modern Veterans Administration Hospital just east of White River. “We don’t do the work of the paid worker. We just provide what no one else is prepared to provide.” Most often this is the PLUS of special attention which means so much to hospitalized men. Or it can include items purchased from the once-a-month check which arrives from the Legion's State Department Finance Committee earmarked for special service in the hospital. - x ”
MONEY FOR this fund is raised through sale of poppies. \ Auxiliary members, this year ) will dot the city tomorrow and Saturday with the red boutonnaires. | As companion escorts, recreation aids, library assistants and ‘helpers in the hospital's physical medical rehabilitation department, the blue and gold garbed women are an important | factor in bringing men back to health and adjustment to everyday living. They even have an auxiliary room. “Activities of Daily Living Room,” where patients relearn. On the activities board are a dummy telephone, door knob, lock, key, among other items. prefer they should. But many husbands want to help, and many more could, if wemen would make it known that fathers, too, have an honor place in the maternity hospital.
If you have an understanding doctor, it is possible you can make an arrangement with him that recognizes your husband's standing in the babyproducing business. When I had my last baby,
my doctor permitted me to | labor in a private ot the |
room, instead of in one:of the cells reserved for such activity. This meant my husband was with me until I went to the delivery room. He timed the pains, held my hand, talked to me, played chess with me, and when I left for the delivery room, hung out the window so He could hear the baby’s first cry, which came right-after- my last one.’ me He knew before I did that we had a girl. When I woke up he was right there to tell me ~about it.

SOME HUSBANDS are a help even in a delivery room. Many women using the Dr, Read method make their husbands a part of their conquering of pain. Others find the presence of their husbands cuts down .on their need of anesthesia. Of course, if your husband shudders at the mere idea, drop the subject. You don't want two babies to worry about. If he is willing, but timid, however, encourage him. There is nothing unnatural | about his being on hand—after | all it isn't too long ago that | fathers frequently delivered their own children and did a mighty fine job of it too, all things considered.
