Ryan and Greenberg To Visit ‘Own Park’
tinguished baseball visitors next Monday when the Cleveland Indians stop over to meet the Hoosier Indians, their newly acquired, Triple-A farm team, in an exhibition attraction under the lights at Victory Field. ¢ Ellis Ryan, who is president of both clubs, and Hank Greenberg, general manager- over all in ‘the Cleveland organization, have consented to accompany Al Lopez’ team to Indianapolis and take a look at “their own park and own farm team” . .. This they were supposed to do at the local Indians’ home opener in April as a gesture of brotherly love in-the baseball business and to be introduced to Indianapolis fans.
The local customers wanted to be assured, person-
ally that Cleveland meant to back up its winter talk |
about putting a first-division contender in the Hoosier capital.
» » ” » But Messrs. Ryan and. Greenberg failed to show up on Apr. 22 and it will be interesting to hear what they will have to say on their delayed appearance Monday . . . now that their new farm team is just one short step out of the league cellar %.. Tribe General Manager Chuck French has arranged a meet:the-press party for the chief executives to be held downtown late Monday afterncon before all and sundry trudge to the ball park to watch the American League pacesetters battle Gene DeSautels’ Redskins.
THE Indianapolis Indians have disposed of two more pitchers . . . Johnny McCall, who developed a sore arm this spring, was released on option.today to the Dallas Eagles of the Texas League . . . Dallas has a player working agreement with Cleveland, but, unlike Indianapolis, is not owned by Ryan, Greenberg & Co. . . Also released to Dallas on option was the Puerto Rican Jumping Bean, Jose Santiago... This pitcher went AWOL on the Indianapolis club on the eve of opening day and returned to Puerto Rico . . . He was suspended indefinitely . . . Apparently Jose is running short of funds . . . He has agreed to return, acJohnny McCall cording to General Manager French, and his reinstatement has been ordered . . . Before departing Indianapolis, Santiago complained of a sore knee, which, he said hampered his pitching . . . Evidently Jose has decided the Texas heat will bake out any physical ailments . . . The release of Johnny McCall, i the loquacious southpaw, comes as no sur- Ri prise . . . He had been placed on the inactive list by Manager Gene DeSautels while the club was touring the West . . . McCall said his arm was out of kilter and as a result, no blazing fast ball and no "control . . . He pitched and won the road opener and the home opener but failed to last the route either time . . . He started four games and finished none, and relieved ‘three times . .. Johnny leaves the Indians with a twothree record . . . Last year, for the seventh placers, he won 10 and lost nine . . . In his first season here, 1950, the lefthander won seven and lost the same number.
Jose Santiago
Only three players now remain on the "Tribe's ‘roster who were with the Indians last year . . . These are Pitcher Frank Papish, Outfielder. Lloyd Gearhart and Catcher Earl Turner «+ « The last-named has asked to be placed “on the voluntary retired list in early June . . . He feels his failure to hit up to old form is a sign he’s about through in Triple-A competition and doesn’t relish being sent to a league of lower classification.
