‘Blackwood on Bridge—
Second Lead Can Often Determine Result of Hand
EFORE you make the opening lead you have seen just the 13 cards in your own hand. When next you are on lead for the defense, you have seen the 13 cards in dummy, too, and you have watched the play to one or more tricks. On a judgment basis your second lead should be better than your first. Mr, Abel wasn't too keenabout any opening from his hand today but he finally decided on the king of spades. The defense might have been a little easier if hg had opened the king of clubs but he had no way to be sure of that.
Miss Brash let the king of spades hold and Mr. Abel had another chance at the winning defense. Hoping to get Mr, Dale in to lead a diamond back, he came out with a low club. But Migs Brash’ won, cashed the ace of trumps, finessed the jack: of spades and-threw off a diamond on the ace of spades. Thus she lost ‘only a spade, a heart and a diamond, making her doubled contract.

YOU AND I see that he could have won the hand by switching to diamonds at trick two. It’s tough leading from an acequeen, but Mr. Abel should have seen it, too.
Mr. Abel
Mr. Dale had to have some- .
thing for his raise to two clubs. He had nothing in spades. On the bidding it was practically certain he had no winners in hearts. He should have either

the ace of clubs or the king of diamonds.
tJ » n IF MR. ABEL had laid down the ace of diamonds at trick two, Mr. Dale would have flashed -the nine, announcing | possession of the king. If he | had not held the king, he would have played his lowest dimaond in which case Mr. Abel could have led a club to his partner’s (supposed) ace. Thus the defenders would have won one trick in each suit. True, if Mr. Dale had held the ace of clubs and not the king of diamonds, then a club shift at trick two—and a dia- | mond return—would have beat the contract two tricks. But Mr. Abel's first job was to be sure to set the contract at all. Incidentally, Miss Brash's concession of the first trick was very good as it put Mr, Abel on the spot for the right shift before he knew too much
about the hand. |

MAKE YOUR OWN WORK CORNER
When Mother is spring housecleaning or when you are reorganizing your workshop yourself, as you should, try | . this way of keeping your tools straight. Any old leather belt fa ‘~*.] lor even a web army belt will serve to make loops for hang- ~~ ori] ing your tools in neat order. This kind of a tool rack has | advantages in a small work area, where perhaps a shelf must serve as a work bench. |
Every household needs a small work corner for hobbies
lor for small household repairs. A screw driver, pliers, ham- | mer, tin snips, adjustable wrench, and a saw, are a few! 'things which are needed.
Take a 1 by 4 inch strip of wood and smooth it for
painting or staining, then, when it is dry, screw one end of the belt to one end of th strip. Loop it and screw it down over each tool so that it will be held securely. and will fit the tool. Screw the board to the wall, and keep each tool in
special place. TOMORROW—Push or Pull Tin Can Toys.
