Here's How to Give Up A Trick and Gain Two
NE of the marks of a fine player is the willingness to give up a trick which can obviously be won, in the interests of an over-all plan for successful defense. This sort of play takes courage, too, and confidence, because it it backfires owing to some strange distributional quirk which you could not have foreseen, partner is almost certain to ask ] why you did not take what Mr. Masters tricks you
could get while the taking was
good. . Mr. Masters made the key defensive play in today’s hand, and while it looked odd at the time, it was the only way to set the contract.
Mr. Dale led the 10 of dia--
monds which was taken on the board with the queen. A heart was led, Mr. Masters ducked and the queen lost to Mr. Dale's king. Mr. Pale now led his last diamond, the deuce, and dummy’s king won. Another heart lead put Mr. Masters in with the ace.
# " » THIS WAS the crucial point. It was clear that Mr. Dale had no more diamonds. But neither did Mr. Abel. On a diamond return it appeared that Mr. Abel could trump high, pick up any outstanding trump and enter dummy on the second round of
¢ 'spades. Club losers in the closed
hand could then be discarded on dummy’'s diamonds. Obviotsly, dummy cguld not be entered except in the spade suit. Therefore, it was essential

to knock "out that entry while Mr. Dale still had a trump left. (If Mr. Dale started with only two trumps, there was no way to beat the hand with any lead.) - Lead the ace and another spade, then? No, because that would give Mr, Abel two spade tricks. There was only one play left—the right one. Mr.
Masters returned the jack of |
spades.
Dummy’s queen won and Mr. |
Abel realized he could never reach dummy AFTER trumps were out. He led the ace of diamonds and discarded his last spade. Mr. Dale ruffed and fired back a spade. Mr. Abel ruffed and thus lost no spade tricks at all. But he did have to lose two clubs which, with the three trump tricks, defeated the contract. Mr, Masters had given up one trick to gain two. I cannot recommend this type of trading too highly.

we The Mpa WIND PADOLE To GNE Boat
WHITTLE
Any boy would enjoy making this paddle-wheel boat. Remember, when suggestions are made in this column, they are just a starting point and you should add to them. For instance, you might want to add a cabin in addition to the spool smoke stack, or you might want to make a double paddle rather than a single blade paddle.
For this boat take a thin piece of wood from a box,

or a knife. Next, notch the rear or stern of the boat so that two prong-like pieces stick out to hold the chip paddle. | Cut this paddle from a shingle or a piece of cigar box| wood. Now, wind the paddle up with a strong rubber band or piece of elastic, so that when it is released it turns like a paddle boat. It turns much more slowly in the water,
and moves the boat along. Add a flag and paint it if you wish. TOMORROW—Hop-Scotch on a Snail Shell Court.
