Psychology OK on Doby|

Paces Cleveland to

Win Over

By CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Sports Writer Larry Doby gave the high-rid-ing Indians another big lift in spirits today—because a neat psy‘chological experiment by Manger Al Lopez worked perfectly. Doby sparked the Indians in their fourth straight victory over the Yankees last night, driving “in three runs in a 10 to 6 de‘cision with .a homer and a key single, but that’s only half the story.

- 2 ‘w . HE HAD been out of the line‘up with a pulled leg muscle and ‘wasn’t supposed to be ready to play again. What's more it didn’t look logical to use him against the Yankees, who made him a helpless batsman with shattered confidence as he tried futilely to ido something against their| “pitches last season. At one time he even confided he didn’t feel like playing against them be-| cause he never seemed to do any-| thing right. It wasn’t physical] trouble—it was psychological. So. Lopez, borrowing a trick from the army, which sends " fliers back into the air to restore their confidence after _ they crack up, put Doby in | against his most troublesome | opponents. And the speedy lefty-swinging Negro responded | nobly against lefty pitcher Bill ¢ Miller.

French, the pitching star, than weré his exBroad Ripple teammates yesterday, Indiana trailed Butler, 5 to 1, yesterday into the fifth, Indiana combined on three hits, a pair of walks and an error for six runs. Sam Esposito's two-run double helped a 7-to-5 lead. French, the IU freshman righthander, relieved Jerry Lind in the fifth, He gave up only two hits and one run in his five-inning fireman's chore. Ca. » : BUTLER Catcher Hugh Wolf, Second Baseman Dick Campbell and Outfielder Don Campbell, are three ex-Ripple diaggondmen who watched their younger cohort douse the fire. French's feat is no fluke. Last year he pitched a no-hit game Apr, 23 against Zionsville, fanning 14 batters. Two years ago, French tossed the last two innings

against Brownsburg, combining

with John Campbell (no relation to Butler's Campbells) for a nohitter. French fanned all six men he faced in two innings.
