developed “machine trouble” today as the wide-open Republican race for Governor entered the home stretch. “

and Logansport attorney. And coming up fast from the -rear was Sam Harrell, Noblesville businessman who appears to be in a favorable position to challenge the leaders.

Meet to Pick Chairman

. These were the latest developments today as Republican leaders in all 92 Indiana counties met to elect 11 district chairmen, Although the Craig-for-Gover-nor bandwagon got off to a fly: ing start, winning a large number of Marion County delegates to the state convention, it sputtered this week during the coun-ty-by-county Republican Party .. reorganization. Some of the “machine trouble” “encountered by Mr. Craig's bandwagon: RE arb TPNEME compatriot and political « chum, Jack McIntyre, former state Legion commander, was defeated for Green County chairman by Mayor Robert McFadden of Linton. This is part of Mr. Craig's own Tth District,

TWO-—D. C. Phillips, Owensville, considered "a strong proTaft, antl-Eisenhower and antiCraig Republican, was re-elected Gibson County chairman, also in the 7th District. THREE-—Hugh Gray, Loogootee, reported opposed to Mr, Craig's nomination, was re- , elected Martin Coufity chairman, also in the Tth District. FOUR~—In Dearborn County, William C. Burns, Lawrenceburg, a supporter of Mr, Harrell for Governor, was re-elected county chairman. FIVE—Mayor Clark's dramatic Jast-minute triumph as Marion County chairman ‘means a Taft supporter will get the 11th District chairmanship and Mr. Craig's pledged delegates might be required to switch allegiance. Capehart Opposes Craig SIX In the torrid 6th District Chairmanship battle today, John Lauer, Williamsport, campaign manager for Mr, Harrell, is expected to beat all opposition. oF lle Berry, Lebanon, the prese chairman, has indicated he oy drop out. That leaves only Gilbert Ogles, Greencastle, a supporter of Leland Smith for Governor, to challenge Mr. Lauer. Sen. Homer E. Capehart is a big factor in the Tth District battle. Most of he county chairmen are pledged to him and have indicated support of his candidate, Milton H. Fitsgerald. Sen. Capehart is opposed to Mr. Craig for Governor. As a result, Mr. Craig cannot took to His own home territory for| much support in the state con-| vention. This is believed to be the most serious defect in his

campaign. Other Candidates Listed

Qther candidates for Governor becoming more active are: State Sen. John Van Ness, Valparaiso, who has a strong following among members of the legislature, State Sen. Harold Handley, La Porte, who has been busy handshaking around the state. State Rep. W. O. Hughes, Ft Wayne, who has a following in Allen County. Francis McCarty, Brimfield industrialist, who hired a new campalgen manager, Robert Kyle, Culver, to speed up his campaign.
