Offering the race of tracks in the area, Salem will present a 50-lap event to top| its program. ¥ » . IT SHOULD be another “hot” one. Also] . the speed boys will be racing] for a $7000 purse.

The field includes all the big | names, some of them. top fa- | vorites in this year's “500”: James, Ruttman, Duane ‘Carter, Leroy 'Warriner, who holds the Salem track record at 19.70 | seconds; Crash Crockett, Red | Renner, Pat O'Connor, Doc Shanebrook, Gene Vaulkner, | Gene Force, Jimmy Daywalt, Jim Rigsby and others. BOBBY BALL made one of the! quickest returns to the 500-Mile track on record after his accident . . » was sitting on the northwest corner of the -track watching other cars run when he -heard it come over the radio that he was| in the hospital. Berto Ascari, driving the Italian factory Ferrari entry, got his first ride on the speedway late yesterday. AAA officials started him off in the 80 miles per hour bracket and let him increase his| speeds to 100. Made about 20 laps. The test run was for Ascari, veteran in European racing but new to the Indianapolis Speedway, to get the “feel” of the track. He might start his driver test today, a must for all drivers who've never been at the “500.” Pilots who passed driver tests yesterday were George Tichenor and Doc Shanebrok. Art Cross and Jim Rigsby completed their 100 miles per hour tests . . . they have 115 and 120 miles per hour brackets to run before they're okeyed. Johnnie Parsons had all the railbirds watching . . . when he| wheeled the Grant Piston Ferrari Special. Got up to about 130 miles per hour. It wasn’t a speed test. « « « Johnnie was trying gear shifting . . . at fast speeds.

The two Novi Specials were
