Success Giving

By EMMA RIVERS MILNER

Layman Tom Jones of the.

Church is riding a runaway

- of —Sluccess,

‘Second Free Methodist horse straight into the jaws

Mr. Jones, a former Illinois farm boy, is making good

in business here. But he refuses to assume credit for * He says forces you might liken to a runahy horse, those over which he had no control, have carried him along.

He gives a double tithe, about one-fifth of his income, to his church. This explains his pros-

perity, he insists,

The. Rev, Verdon Dunckel and

the Rev. Vernon Dunckel, twin

ministers of Second Church, per-

suaded Mr. Jones to come into The Times and tell his story. He was very fearful of seeming boastful or immodest. The Dunckels will tell you that such persons as Tom Jones are responsible for the breath-taking achievements of the Second Church. Building iCompleted Over the brief eight months that the twin ministers have served Second Church, its 152 adult members have completed construction of their $190,000 edifice. They have paid each of the pastors a larger salary than their former individual minister. Both the twins are married and have families. Thus the church malintains two parsonages.

gregation of working men and women has given about $39,000, or approximately $326 per mem-

ber, to the church treasury, The

church also operates four Sunday school busses,

The twin pastors explained that all this was done through freewill offerings. The Free Methodist Denomination frowns on fish fries, bazaars, fairs and other moneymaking projects by churches. And it {s customary rather than unusual for members to tithe.

Way to Prosperity

The pastors don’t consider it especially unselfish for men and women to tithe, or give a tenth of income to their churches. They say tithing makes for prosperity just in the nature of it. To do it, the tither must make a budget, systematize his finances. He discovers waste and extravagance and eliminates them. After giving, he finds himself possessed of more money than formerly. The ministers made a national reputation for stabilizing finances of churches in their former charge, Hillsdale, Mich. The National Stewardship Council named the Hillside Free Methodist Church, the outstanding Protestant parish of the United States, over a period covering 20 years, in the matter of per capita giving to the church, The Stewardship Council, now a part of the National Council of Churches, covers all major Protestant denominations and many minor ones.

‘Never Repealed’

“God laid down the law of tithing for the Hebrews and He never has repealed it,” the Rev. Verdon Dunckel commented solemnly. Then he cited passages from both the Old and New Testaments to substantiate what he said. Church layman Jones, now 38, recalls he began to tithe when he was just 18. He hadn't been converted then, he says, wasn't very religious, His parents taught him to tithe and he thought he’d bet-

ter do it. He sent ‘part of his|_s«

factory earnings from another

* city to his mother for the church/

at home. And seeming good luck hgs smiled on him all his life, But there were times when he was 1) em————————— bit uneasy. For example, he was being trained to be a salesman for a certain organization, when he discovered unethical practices. CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH _ Delaware and Walnut Streets ; 700 North) Dr. W. A. them and he quit his job. But it wasn't long until he was earning more money than ever before with another. : After moving to Indianapolis, he happened tc fall into conversation with an elderly woman one afternoon on a bus. She mentioned being very weary after running her business all day. To his surprise, he heard himself offer to buy it. Later, he did so, with borrowed money. It was a very small affalr. But now it has grown tremendously. Whereas at first, he handled one lige of goods, now he handles many. He made deliveries in an old sedan in the beginning but at present, operates four trucks. Approximately six times the

original floor space is required to! house the present business.

Drove Horse Cart

Perhaps the fact that Tom drove eight and a half miles each way, in a two-wheel, horse-drawn cart, to attend school had some-

thing to do with his later history. Or the fact that he.always. could: denies gnd:

berries from the farm and other items as a boy, may have had some bearing on it. Be that as it may, after he was converted in a revival in Second Church, Mr, Jones became a very active member. And tithing makes him feel strong and effectual, he says. Of course, “Tom Jones” is not the layman's real name. He said if I should use his name it would spoil the story. And I wouldn't spoil a story for the world.
