CHICAGO, May 9 (UP)—A blond ' tavern-keeper known as “Skippy” was found shot and fatally wounded in front of her
ant said she apparently stole his gun and killed herself.
Lt. John Canning said he was talking to Mrs. Joan McColl, 34, in her tavern when she was killed. However, he sald his back was turned when the fatal shot war fired. Lt. Canning sald the blond bartender must have slipped the gun from his holster and killed herself. He surrendered his gun, fully loaded, to fellow policemen who sald they could not tell immediately . whethér ‘it had been recently fired.
Policeman Quizzed
The policeman spoke guardedly to newsmen about the events of the shooting after he was questioned behind closed doors in police headquarters.
Lt. Canning’s police acquaintances said he and Mrs. McColl had been “keeping company” for some time, although both are married. Police Commissioner Timothy O'Connor said “the picture isn’t clear” and appointed Deputy Commissioner Philip Breitzke and Chief of Detectives Andrew Ait ken to take personal charge of the Investigation, | “er CRNNg sald (he shooting] was witnessed by a bar employee, Mrs. Marie Breseman, 45. Mrs. Breseman, however, said she was In the basement when the shot was fired and hurried back to find Mrs. McColl lying on the floor and Lt. Canning dabbing at the blood on her head with a towel.
Called to Tavern
Mrs. Breseman said there were two men in the bar when she went downstairs but that Lt. Canning and Mrs. McColl were the only occupants when she returned. Lt, Canning, who celebrated his 44th birthday yesterday, told newsmen Mrs, McColl called him to the tavern yesterday to complain about a new ordinance barring women bartenders, . They were still talking he said, when he turned his back for a moment and heard the shot. He called his police station and ac-
the head. They also examined the tavern closely in search of| another gun and tried to discover the identity of the two men Mrs. Breseman reported in the tavern. |
