Church Nevis ro Cleric to Yell Of Cuban Trip
A RIVERS MILNER By EM Freres Eater Imagine 53 Methodist parsons lustily singing as the pilot set their plane down in Cuba. Among the ministers, chosen from all over the United States
to conduct a preaching mission on the ‘island, was Dr. John G. Benson, Indianapolis. The Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the North Methodist Church has invited Dr. Benson to tell all the women’s groups of the parish about his visit. They are calling the 1 p. m. Thursday meeting a “fiesta.” Hostesses will dress in Spanish costume and luncheon tables will be decorated accordingly.
Made Honorary Oitizen
Dr. Benson, a widely traveled Christian missioner and former superintendent of the Methodist Hospital, returned with tokens of esteem from the Cubans, They made him an honorary citizen and presented him with a Cuban flag. Es’ fell in love with the people,” ‘was Dr. Benson's comment in an interview. “I preached through an interpreter. But I could tell by their eyes whether they liked what I said. They don’t need words. They can talk with their eyes. During the closing words of my first sermon in the Havana Methodist Cathedral, half the audience rose quietly and moved to the front of the church. I was a bit startled, not knowing what was about to happen. “They knelt down in front and remained so as I said the benediction. Afterward, they gathered around me to shake my hand. “The Rev, C. P. Shulhafer is the American pastor of the cathedral. They have a Cuban pastor, too. Mrs. Shulhafer is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs, J. G Haston, 3047 Sutherland Ave.
2000 Joined Church About 2000 persons joined the Methodist Church as a result of the jeland-wide mission, Dr. Benson reports, “In some communities there are no churches of any kind,” he added. “In one village, the people met the missioner with a brass band on arrival and paraded throughout the village. “Cuba is a mission zed Joo large for any one denomination handle,
* «Presbyterians and Episcopalfans are doing a great united work there. They both co-operated with - Methodists to arrange for the preaching mission.

Instruction Needed
“Training in the fields of health, education and religion are greatly needed. “The university is trying to bring in new industries to help solve the problem of idleness created by slack months in production of sugar, There is a great deal of wealth in Cuba and a great deal of poverty.” Mrs. Joe Hill, WSCS president, will preside at the “fiesta” meeting and Mrs. Paul W, Nicely will be in charge of the program.
