By IRVING LEIBOWITZ ~ Taft-for President supporters in Indiana, rallied around a new battle cry today—"break.off dip lomatic relations with Russia.” It was sounded by tall, slender, silver-haired Lt. Gen. Albert C, Wedemeyer, U. 8. Army. (Ret.), who told a Taft rally in the Claypool Hotel last night “every Russian diplomat is a potential spy.’ More than 400 Republicans gave the former Far East Army commander a standing ovation and broke into: prolonged cheers

“We should have as many diplomats and workers in Russia as they have here,” Gen. Wedemeyer declared. “And our people should be given the same privileges we give them. If Russia doesn’t agree, we should break off | diplomatic relations.” The General gave a ringing in-| dorsement of Sen. Taft for Presi-/ dent, praised the Ohio Senator’s| policies, integrity, realism and ability. | He emphasized that while he respected Gen. Eisenhower pergonally as a man and a soldier, | he was supporting Sen. Taft for| President “down to the very last battle.” |

Gen. Wedemeyer, whose detailed report on disastrous Amer-| fcan policy in the Far East was suppressed by the Truman a@ministration, captivated the] Veterans-for-Taft audience with blasts at Universal Military Training, secrecy in government and “our humiliating blunder in| Korea.” : He said UMT was “untraditional and un-American,” The General, a former infantry officer, called for a strong Air Force and a small standing army.

“Secret agreements and deci-| sions kept from the American people and Congress were responsible for the Korean War,” Gen. Wedemeyer charged. He advocated less secrecy on all governmental levels, saying:

We have a protracted crisis today because this was not done.” Earlier, Gen, Wedemeyer had dinner with former Gov. Ralph Gates, Mayor Clark and Lisle Wallace, chairman of the Taft campaign in Indiana. At an afternoon press conference, Gen. Wedemeyer told newsmen he felt the solution of communism was not military force) but a dynamic program of political appeal. In paying tribute to Sen. Taft, the General said: “Taft is not isolationist. he’s not an internationalist. ja 5 a realist.” After much prying, newsmen learned the General's 21-year-old son, Robert, is a jet pilot in Korea. His other son, Albert Jr, a captain, recently returned" from the Korean front.
