Smart Bid Helps Masters

Make 6-Spade Contract

N . RESPONSE to the diamond opening Mr. Masters put in a game-forcing bid of two spades. This was not merely because he had three and a half honor tricks. He had that

high card strength plus a solid spade suit. In other words if his spades had been headed by A K 7, the jump takeout would have ; 4 been highly uestionable. Mr. Masters . Mr. Masters’ second bid of four spades was by no means a shutout bid. It simply meant that he had a spade suit which needed no support and that his first bid of two spades had not been shaded. n 5 »

MR. DALE, who had slightly underbid his hand with his two no trump call, was glad to move ahead with a bid of five hearts, which said that he was interested in a spade slam and had the ace of hearts, With this information, Mr. Masters was willing to contract for sixodd. Mr. Champion opened the gueen of hearts and dummy’s king won. Mr. Masters saw that there was no chance of discarding a club on dummy’s diamonds. Mr. Muzzy would have stopped thinking at this! point -and risked everything on the finesse of the club queen. = ” n

he took the ace and king of diamonds and ruffed a third round of diamonds with the king of spades. He entered dummy with the nine of trumps, picking up. the defenders’ last spades, and led the last diamond from the board, ruffing with the queen of spades. ’ Now he led his last heart to dummy’s ace and returned the nine of hearts on which he played the trey of clubs. Mr, Champion won with the 10 and had no return which would give his side a chance for a second trick. A club return would be into Mr. Masters’ ace-queen and a heart seturn would be ruffed in dummy while Mr. Masters discarded the queen of clubs. Mr, Champion returned a club as it was possible that his partner held the queen, but Mr, Masters spread the hand for six-odd.

getting a piece of wall board is expensive! Hanging a pillow slip on a coathanger makes an ideal pin-up board, because you can do the work yourself and do it now, today. Ask Mother for an odd pillow slip or one which is torn on the side. Then, with a few stitches at several points, fasten the slip to the hanger so that it hangs straight. It isn't even necessary to sew it to the hanger, for you can pin it up with safet It is no fun to have a up board on your wall if you don’t keep it up-to-date. en you go to shows or games,
