By HUBBARD COBB Just as soon as we get this piece finished we're Jong rome and try to find out roof leaks when ‘the wind is SSW at 14 miles per hour, the tempera ture is above 32 degree F. and it's raining about the way it did a week ago last Thursday. Our theory is that it's the flashing around the chimney that’s at fault. When the rain is being driven by a strong wind at just the right direction it could be forced up under the flashing and once it got there it would be pretty easy for it to get down onto the living room ceiling. Anyway, we'll take some roofing cecent, thin it down a little with gasoline (we do this outdoors, of course) and then work it under the flashing, over the fi and wherever else it might do some good. We'll also check the condition of the asphalt shingles around that vicinity, Maybe some of them were not properly nailed down and when there is a wind pa In Ups ste so that water ets in un em. This 1s @ enough to fix. Just put a a. cement under the shingle, press it down and that’s all Another spot that may be causing tpouble is the valley flashing. Quite often you run across a situation when a driving rain gets up under the seam between shingles and flashing but this, te0, can be fixed easily enough by lifting up the edge of the shingles and applying roof-

ing cement along the e th flashing. 5 ge of the

Window Filters

One of the drawbacks of living in the most industrialized nation in the world is that you get a lot of soot and dirt blowing in through your open windows dur. ing the summer months. This condition can make the average housewife pretty unhappy. A rather inexpensive partial solution to this problem is to install fabric screenSiiin the open windows. The ided*behind these is that the fabric will catch a good deal of the dust and dirt and keep it from getting into the house. If the screens are replaced from time to time or washed they'll do a pretty fair Job. The main trouble with these screens is that they keep out a good deal of air along with the dust and dirt. This can be quite 2 drawback during very hot weather when every bit of moving air counts. ell, someone figured out the idea of combining an electric fan with a filter and setting this unit into an open window, The fan pulls “air into the house through the filter. This gives you a pretty adequate supply of clean fresh afr; If you like to build things, you ean construct one pf these units yourself out of a féw pieces of plywood, a small exhaust fanand a fiber filter such as used for warm air pea syste Don't,

get along by just placin the Rt

in the open window without the fan. It'll keep out the dust okay but it won't allow air to enter either,

Replacing Screening Every spring for almost a hundred years now, the man of the

place the wire screening on wood insect screen frames and in nine cases out of 10 has ended losing his temper. The actual application of the screening is easy enough; the trouble comes in trying to get the screening tight and even. Here is an almost foolproof method: Take two saw horses or tables

than the length of the screen frame. Place two pieces of 2 ins, by 4 ins. between these two end supports. (You there, in the back row are not paying strict attention and if your screening is loose and bulgy you have only yourself to blame). Now take two shorter iedes OF 3 108. by ¢ Wa. ad Place em at each end on top of the longer side pieces, your screen frame so it is supported at each end by these two short pieces of 2 ins. by 4 ins. If we've explained this correctly and If you have followed instructions there should be a gap of about three inches between the sides of the sereen frame and the long pleces of 2 ins. by 4 ins, connecting the two end supports together, Press down on the center of each side piece of the frame and hold it like this with a clamp secured to the: side supports. ow install your screening, pulling fit just snug over the frame and fastening at each end only, Remove the clamps and the frame will spring back into position pulling the wire screening nice and tight. Now fasten the sides into place and you're all set.

Some People’s Fingers Cause Metal to Rust

By Selence ¥ervice CINCINNATI, Apr. 26—"Rusters” have a “hidden handicap” which is giving doctors and nurses a medical detection problem and running up production costs in metal working industries, Dr. E, C. Binstadt of the Cin-

cinnati Milling Machine Co. reported at the Industrial Health| Conference here. The hidden handicap of the “puster” is that his. finger touch makes metal rust. An abnor. mality of the sweat glands is the cause. ’ “From time to time in the shop a batch of dry ‘finished parts of cast iron or steel will show up with deeply etched rusty Angers print marks where the ruster bandled them,” Dr, Binstadt said. “In precision-finished parts this becomes quite costly because comlete regrinding or recutting is ”

Very little is found in the medfea] literatura on this condition, The only way of identifying the rusters is through the tedious process of checking each émployee who came in contact with a damaged part. When found, the “ruster” is transferred to another job that does not require handling metals,
