Fight Reds In India
By EMMA RIVERS M) MILNER THE Protestant Churches Times blunder but learn
. from their blundering in the man or woman,
Representatives of 30 different Protestant denomina-
tions, quite frankly, are expressing regret over what they con-~ sider one of the churches’ grievous blunders. talied “ ltt They say they the powerful barrier harley ney could have raised against the spread of communism in a large part of the earth. And of course, they are speaking of & non-political barrier, Indianapolis Protestants along. with others of their faith in the United States, over many dec ades, have poured ‘millions upon millions of dollars into the misgion fields of China and India. Schools, churches, hospitals, homes, orphanages and other institutions stand as monuments to their devotion. " » EVERY ttle boy and girl of yours who has dropped pennies into his missionary mite box, as well as their elders who have “given until it hurt” to the cause, holds a stake in the fate of India. ‘What happened In China has happened, Recent elections in India indicate that communism is growing there, The India Committee of the National Council of Churches has sent-out an urgent appeal to the churches not to repeat in India the mistakes made in pre-Com-munist China. The council includes representatives of 30 denominations. : . 8» DR. DONALD ¥. WEST of Indianapolis has just returned from an extensive tour of several countries of Asia, As executive secretary of the division of India, Thailand and the ppines for the United Christian Missionary Soclety of the Disciples of Christ, he sees that his church’s policies are applied in its missions in those countries. He visited the three and also Japan, The India Committee strongly urges-that the denominations lose no time in transferring their holdings to Christian nationals in India. Disciples of Christ have been doing just that for some time, Dr. West reports. s 8
AS THE Communists advanced in China, they seized mission properties denouncing Americans as they did so. They shouted invectlve against “imperialistic Americans with holdings in foreign countries.” With nationals In charge of mission properties and work In India, a very different situation will arise from that in China. Christian Indians then will make

manner of a good and wise
fellowship between nationals and Americans is very real “Missionary institutions such as hospitals, schools and residences are held in trust by a body composed equally of mission representatives and nationals. And provision has been. made that complete control will be vested in national Maden. " » y DR. WEST ok of the high esteem in which Christians are held in India. He sald although less than two per cent of India is Christian, seven per cént of her officials of all degrees are Christians, He quoted Dr. H, C. Mookerjee, governor of West Bengal, as saying to him that good will has been created In the mind of India toward America and Britain because of mission services in such fields as medicine, agriculture and education. Dr. Mookerjee thinks the utterly selfless giving of the missionaries, which exemplifies the love of Jesus Christ is the most con-| vincing element of the missions and not préselyting or evangelization,
