Bid at One Range Okay—

O YOU ever respond to -
your er's opening
with a bid of one in a three card major suit? This is a bid which seems to be gaining in popularity.
-
From the results I have © seem, it will
popular long, I must admit, however, that the sad expericenes I have noted stemmed principally from ’ the fact that the three-card Mr. Masters cuits were not bid in the proper “setting.” There is a place for such bids, but there are two things to remember. They should not be made because. they are “good” or desirable in themselves but because no other good bid is available. And you should either be willing to play the suit you bid if partner insists on it or you should have some other safe landing place. MR. MASTERS had a problem when his partner opened the bidding with one club in today’s deal. Three clubs was an ambiguous response and would fall far short of giving Mr. Dale and accurate picture of his holding. Both four clubs and five five clubs weré inaccurate shots in the dark, Therefore Mr. Masters decided to make a hid at the one range which %ould give him plenty of time to learn about his partner's hand. He bid

very fine bid of four hearts. Mr. Masters figured this last bid as an attempt by Mr. Dale to show where his principal strength lay. The following four no trump bid located three acres and the

kings. With this information at hand Mr. Masters bid the grand slam on' the theory that Mr. Dale was much more likely to hold the king of hearts than the king of diamonds. If that were the case, then 13 tricks could be counted because the queen of hearts would be a sure winner. i
