NEW YORK, Apr. 24 -—~ The) Communist Party, self-proclaimed; champion of minorities, is accused | by one of the nation's leading Jewish organizations of creating anti-Semitism. The accusation stemmed from the party's campaign to win sympathy for Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the convicted atom sples sentenced to death for espionage in behalf of Russia,

& «party's manufacturing false evi £ ‘dence that the Rosenbergs are

Jews, according to the Antl-De-famation League of B'nai B'rith, . In the Jewish press throughout “the country, the ADL's president, State Supreme Court J Steinbrink, warned “well-meaning citizens” not to fall for "Communist Party tactic.”

‘Kind of Blackmail’

“What this really amounts to," says the league's current bulletin, “is a kind of blackmail imposed by the Communists on the Jewish community, “By publicly emphasizing the Jewish d of the Rosenbergs” they are trying to force “the Jewish community into part- ~ nership with the Communists.” +. The committee's pitch is geared to fantastic charges that the ~ Rosenbergs are victims of a “pogrom-like” trial, of a “vicious ‘anti-Semitic legal lynching” and of “the threatening a war! and the fascist and anti-Semitic dangers that are an integral part of this thredtening war.” One of the committee's gimmicks, warned the league, is to promote public rallies in Jewish communal buildings.

The, committee is sending dele- : gations to W, and Ink spiring telephone and telegraph barages on the White House and Congress. And, naturally, raising 3 defense funds. Claiming to speak for “thousands of Americans,” the commit~ tee flashea a sponsors’ list weight ed with Communists and fellow travelers. One of these is Morris U. Schappes, the City College . teacher who went to Sing Sing for perjury for swearing he was no Communist, There are other sponsors, also, to lend respectability; Robert Morss Lovett, former Governor of the Virgin Islands; Profs. E. Berry Borgum of New York University, Ephraim Cross of City College and Gene Weltfish of Columbia; Waldo Frank, the writer and critic; Rev. Spencer Kennard, described as a “famous Biblical scholar,” and Rabbi Touis D, Gross, publisher of the Brooklyn Jewish Examiner, One release announced triumphantly that an “amicus brief”
