Mr. Champ's Sniping Puts Crimp in Partner's Game
R. ABEL is not at his best when playing with Mr,
Champion as a partner. The
great man’s constant criticism throws him off his game. He is either resentful or confused or both. T hi 8s leads to the we \ loss of thousands of points in‘ the course of time. And of course it is
But here is a sidelight that is beyond understanding. As fine a technical player as Mr. Champion is,
Mr. Abel he seems unable to realize that his arrogance costs him, too. Mrs. Keen led the jack of diamonds and dummy's queen won. MP. Abel saw that he might lose
three spades, a heart and a club. After some thought. he banged down the ace and king of hearts. This good guess brought no comment from Mr.
_ Champion. Only the bad plays
rate his notice.
” * o AT TRICK FOUR Mr. Abel led a club and finessed dummy’s queen. Mr. Dale won with the king and was in no hurry fo try to cash spade tricks. He merely returned a diamond which was won in the closed hand with the king. Mr. Abel now, cashed his other high diamond, discarditig a small club from the board. H¢ led to the ace of clubs and returned a small spade. Mrs. Keen killed the jack with the king and a spade return through dummy up to Mr. Dale's ace-ten completed the set.

os MR. ABEL made no reply, as he already saw where he had gone wrong. His correct line of | play after clearing the trump suit was to cash the ace and king of diamonds, discarding the deuce of clubs from dummy. Next, lead a club and go right up with the ace. Return the queen of clubs and regard-

A memo pad is handy for all Mothers. Decide on the size of memo paper you want to use, say 5 inches by 7 linches, and then make a holder to keep it together. The ‘holder can be made by cutting a square of card or colored \construction paper just a little larger than the memo pad. |This will be the background. Cut two strips from another color of paper, about one inch wide and long enough to form pockets at the top and bottom. These will hold the paper and keep it from slipping. Glue half of the strips to the back and fold the ends around and glue them. Pretty?

lead back a minor suit card, giving Mr. Abel a sluff and a ruff; or a spade, which auto- | matically would make it impossible for Mr. Abel to lose | three tricks in that suit.
