AT 22 MEREDITH started a five-year flyte-fest with the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York. By 1929 he was In Hollywood, scoring musie for early “talkies.” (He later did the scoring for Charlie Chaplin's “The Great Dictator” and for “The Little Foxes.”) Then he became a musical director for radio, sometimed directing as many as 17 shows weekly, and somehow found time to compose original works and to direct symphony orchestras up and down the west coast. . His comedy talents were discovered by accident, when he was musical director on Hollywood's “Good News” program about a dozen years ago. A George Kaufman comedy script- called for four male players, but someone had slipped up and only three had been engaged Robert Taylor, Spencer Tracy and Hanley Stafford. “So out of desperation,” he said, “they gave the part with the fewest lines to me, and the part with the fewest lines turned out to be the funniest « « and I'll be John Brown {if 1 wasn’t on my way to becoming a perfectly practical radio stooge.”
