Mercury releases is for you.
These will never top the Hit Parade.
Granz-supervised waxings are for) the people who ‘think the Hit
Parade strictly belongs to Vaughn |
Monroe and Sammy Kaye. There's a number by an all-| star group tagged '“Charlie Ventura’s Big Four,” one of those recording groups that takes the name of the guy who happens to be currently fronting it. The tunes are “Love Is Just Around the Corper” and “O. H, Blues,” and the musicianship is top-notch, right from Charlie’s sweet and bawdy sax to Buddy Rich's solid drumming. One of the all-time great jazz vocalists, Anita O'Day, sings “T,over Come Back to Me,” and “Rock 'n’ Roll Blues,” and an outfit fronted by Roy Eldridge plays “Paster Parade” and “I Bee Everybody's Baby.” Try it if too much sweet stuff has been cloying up your turntable Guaranteed, not a cloy in a carload. » » ” COLUMBIA —Mary Martin reviews all the wonderful tunes from the 1937 hit “Babes In Arms.” The album which borrows the show title features Miss Martin singing Rodgers and Hart classics like “Where or When,” “My Funny Valen tine” “Johnny One - Note,” and “The Lady 1s a Tramp” to name Mary Martin a few. Doris Day and Guy Mitchell team and Paul Weston's orchestra furnishes the background on two duets,” “A Little Kiss Goodnight” and “Gently Johnny.” Here's a new Frankie Laine, “That's How It Goes,” and “Snow In Lover's Lane,” both romantic ballads in contrast to his recent “Hambone” and “Gandydancers’ Ball.” Champ Butler teams a ballad “Two” with a scat ‘second side, “Meet Me On the Corner.” Sarah Vaughn does a ballad coupling “If Someone Had Told Me” and “Corner to Corner.” ” ” » “DECCA -— Here are two more Leroy (Blue Tango) originals, with Composer Anderson also waving the baton on “Penny Whistle Song” and ‘Horse and Buggy. ” Tommy Dorsey teams with Gordon Jenkins’ orchestra on “There Are .Such Things” and
Dorsey disc is the slapstick “Ham-' bone” and “Come What May.” The same Mr. Jenkins does the {backing for The Weavers on “Gandy Dancers Ball” and ‘Around the Corner.”
Kaye singing “Mademoisellel De Paree” and “You're for Me,§, Mimi.” Don Cherry sings “Sentimental Tears” and’ “It Doesn't Matter Where I Go.” New wax by Broadway star Dolores Gray is “If Someone Told Me” and “To Be Loved by You." Connie Boswell sounds her usual best on “I Know What It Means to Be Lonesome” and “Someone Stole * My Darling.” Likewise another “perennial” group, the Andrews Sisters who sing “Ever Lovin’ Rag” and “Why Worry?” Who'da thought Louie Armstrong could sound good on two items like “Indian Love Call” and “Jeannine”? But on the other hand, Louie sounds good on almost anything he tries and this follows suit. The Four Aces harmonize on “My Hero” and “Spring Is a Wooderful Thing.” Louis Jordan is in an advicegiving mood, “Never Trust a Woman.” ” » .
