"PAGE § Athenaeum Players Are ‘Convincing’
By HENRY BUTLER The Athenaeum Players’ pre-|
§ view of “The Glass Menagerie” §
afd Martin Marks’ plano recital at Jordan College of Music last, night formed a double bill for this
reviewer, At the Athenaeum, a substan-
tial and convincing setting by!
1,ouls Popcheff, technical director, was one of the best features of this production of Tennessee wiljams’ remarkable tragedy.
The play undoubtedly will run |i
more smoothly in its public performance tonight. Nervousness and line-muffing were apparent in
last night's private showing, as bd
nearly always happens, : As of last evening, I wasn't too
well impressed by casting or directing, Director william E. Sarl}
Watters managed to capture some, sf the wistfulness and pathos of the play. | Unfortunately, he permitted far too much stridency to develop, Melba Githens, as the mother, and John D. Roberts, as the son in a big scene early in the play, started and finigshed by shouting at each other and, for the most nart, remaining stationary. As a result, any value of climax was lost, I thought Mary Malatesta, who conveyed in facial expression and bodily gesture the anguish - and Joneliness of the crippled daughter, was being shouted out of a chance to do her wensitive best. ‘But this tentative judgment is pased on seeing only a portion of the play. 1 would advise some toning down, if it's possible, in tonight's performance so As not io destroy the semi-dreamliike quality of the play-—one of its best features. 2 Meanwhile at the Odeon, Mr. Marks was industriously going through hig.graduation recital before an unusually large crowd for one of those events, We arrived in time for the last few variations of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 109, (M¢, Marks previously had played the Sonata No. 1 by Ozan Marsh, nis teacher and chairman of the Jordan piano department.)
Mr, Marks has great talent. Ij
ave seldom heard a student olanist who could manage tone and shading so well. Some glaring lapses of memory in the Chopin ¥ minor Fantasy marred what started out to be a beautiful performance, | bd and fascinating @ minor Concerto of Kabalev-
r. Marks was not always memory.
skyi Mr. Marks had excellent .support Bn the second plano by plan Laut. The support came in ‘Randy several times, since gain eure
