The Methodist Federation for Social Action has no official link with the Methodist Church of 10 million members. While Methodist laymen and ministers do pelong to the federation, it has aroused much indignation in the church, especially over the conduct of its executive secretary, the Rev, Jack R. McMichael. The Council of Bishops of the Methodist Church asked Rev, Mc Michael to drop the name, “Methodist,” from the title of his federation. But, so far, he has not

7 Seeks Opinions Since 1 have heard so much
y condemnation of Rev. McMichael . (and the federation, I got in touch , (with delegate Templin and asked
his opinions of both, “Jack McMichael has outlived whatever usefulness he ever had as leader of this group,” was Rev. Templin's statement, “The General Conference will doubtless take action to guaran-
private judgment while at the same time preventing any extremist viewpoints being represented as the voice of the entire church,” he continued, “The pamphlet prepared by the House Un-American Activities Committee has nothing that is not available to newspaper readers. It has disclosed nothing that has not been read by the public already. A good deal of the material dates back 12 or 15 years and contains criticism of certain organizations that no longer exist. Leadership Under Attack
“The present federation has been an expresison of left-wing extremists who have sought to identity the Kingdom of God with left-wing political and economic action, “This leadership now is under attack particularly by those who seek to identify the Kingdom of God. with right-wing political and economic action, “The Kingdom of God can be identified with neither the left wing nor; the right.” Over the four years since the General Conference last met. the Methodist Church has been striving to rebuild and repair missions destroyed by the war overseas. Rev, Templin said the General is expected either to au that the wotk continue at the same pace or that major Stfost be transferred to the United 8.
New Churches Needed
He explained that new churches in America need to be built, colleges and seminaries need expanding, hospitals and homes also are crying for construction, “We need to fatten the goose or we won't get the golden egg,” he added. Another matter scheduled to come up for discussion at the General Conference is the con-
troversial report of the Survey
Commission. This report, a kind of “Hoover Plan” for the church, outlines ways to prevent overlapping, effect economies and improve administrative efficiency. The church made the survey with the ald of industrial engineers and at a cost of $240,000.
