To Five, Shocks Mr. Meek
R. MEEK thought serious. ly about passing his part. ner's opening bid in today's deal. But with an ace and two Jacks; which was plenty for a one over one response, he final. ly decided to bid one heart. He almost fell off his chair when Miss _ Brash promptly raised him to five hearts. This completely unscientific bid really put Mr. Meek on the spots. He had a sure diamond loser and (apparently) two spade losers. But he made his contract. anyway, on the following line of play.
2 n # THE OPENING lead was the king of diamonds and he won with the ace in dummy. He cashed the ace and king of clubs and ruffed a third round of clubs in his hand.. He entered dummy with a small heart to the king and led the last club and ruffed it. Next, he laid down the ace of trumps, picking up the last ones held by the opponents, Then came the jack of diamonds and Mrs. Keen was in the lead. If she returned a diamond at this point, Mr. Meek could have ruffed in his hand while discarding a small spade from the board. Then the dummy would have been good with the exception of one spade loser.
- » 2 BUT MRS. KEEN led back a spade. She gave long thought to the question of whether to lead the 10 or a small one. Actually, it made no difference
. but her final ehoice was the 10.
Mr. Meek covered with the jack iA dummy and Mr. Abel played the queen. Mr, Abel was now
