Harriman Boom Sounds Like a Pop
By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Seripps-Howard Staff Writer
NEW YORK, Apr. 18—W. Av. erell Harriman’s Democratic presjdential nomination boom sounded more like a muffled pop today after his $150,000 coming-out party at the Waldorf-Astoria Ho-|

ities outshined him on the plat- . form at the $100-a-plate dinner. And the ap-
well-fed Dem owo crats from New, York state and Mr. Rldney elsewhere was quite perfunc-| tory, despite a blessing from President Truman. L Most whole-hearted and sustained. applause . and . cheering went to Gov. Adlai Stevenson of Illinols, who had withdrawn from | the presidential race just 24 hours before. Gov. Stevenson's speech was the one that made the rafters ring. It eclipsed such other contenders as Vice President Alben Barkley and Sens, Robert 8. Kerr,
Brien McMahon and Fstes Ke-| I
fauver, The latter made a fumbling presentation that must have disappointed his TV admirers. All speakers stressed the idea that the Democratic Party will win again because it stands for peace and progress, while the Republicans are suffering from. factional strife. | Mr. Harriman, whom Sen. Herbert H. Lehman of New York declared is a lifelong New York Democrat, was particularly bitter in his denunciation of the GOP. : “The Republican Party carried| this country into bankruptcy, and will do it again,” Mr, Harriman! declared. “They haven't changed a bit. They are opposed to everything that has been done in the last 20 years to make America strong.” The Democratic Party is not afraid to move forward in the world today, he said. He decried Republican pleas for hesitancy, now that the Kremlin has become bewildered. Mr. Harriman formerly was ambassador to Russia and England. He now is Mutual Security Director, High praise for his work in all these posts was voiced by the other speakers, particularly the Vice President. Gov. Stevenson, citing the tresndous job the next President will fate, told the Democrats that “it is more important what wins this fall than who wins.” “What ideas, what concept of the world of tomorrow, what quality of perception and leader ship and courage are the really important matters,” he said. Similar pleas for Democratic idealism were made by Sen. MeMahon and Sen. Kefauver. Sen. Kern contented himself with recalling the old depression days, when the GOP was in power,
