Mr. Masters Illustrates ‘How He Got His Name
OT everybody would have made four spades on this hand-—as Mr. Masters did. The way he handled it illustrates the difference between merely good play and masterful play. Mr. Champion opened the king of diamonds and Mr. Masters ducked, even though there was a lone dia-~ mond on the board. His prime purpose : in ducking was Mr. Masters not to induce another diamond lead into his ace-jack, although, of course, that would have been very welcome. His real purpose sprang from the following reasoning. Two club tricks had to be lost in any case. If Mr. Champion had both king and queen of hearts, then two successive finesses in that suit would lose two more tricks and put the contract down one. ® ” n CONTINUING this line of thought, the contract might still be made, even though the king and queen of hearts were both wrong, if the first heart finesse were taken only after all safe out-cards were removed from Mr. Champion’s hand. To carry out this plan, Mr. Masters saw that it was necessary to keep Mr. Abel out of the lead, so that Mr. Abel could not return a heart prematurely. This he accomplished in the follownig manner, At trick two, Mr. Champion was too smart to lead another diamond and shifted to a club. Dummy’'s ace was put up and the ace and king of trumps

were cashed, clearing that suit. Mr, Masters now led the ace of diamonds, discarding a small club from dummy.
” » ” NEXT CAME the jack of diamonds and when Mr. Champion covered with the queen, Mr. Masters did not ruff on the board, but instead threw off dummy’s last club. Mr. Champion got out with a club which dummy - ruffed high. The closed hand was entered with the ten of spades and the last club was ruffed out. Only ‘after this brilliant preparation did Mr. Masters lead the jack of hearts, He played the four from his hand and Mr. Champion won with the queen. A “heart return here would automatically give Mr. Masters two heart tricks. Mr. Champion’s only other card was a club and to lead it would enable Mr. Masters to ruff in one hand and discard a losing heart from the other.
