PAM. Joe Williams Says—
This May
By JOBE WILLIAMS NEW YORK, Apr. 15—You'll probably be seeing the last of Rocky Graziano as a big timer when he goes against Sugar Ray Robinson out in Chicago tomorfow. , This is a fight the dead end kid never wanted. The
only reason he's taking it is he needs a pay day, as the
boys say. . “And he might get lucky and belt him,” the boys add, remembering the way the Rock used to wing with his right hand. He might, but that's not the way to bet, because the Rock won't go in there believing he can win to begin with and besides he knows he’s just about through, . o ” rr . n . THERE WAS a time, four or five years back, when this fight would have captured the imagination of the fight world, notwithstanding the Rock’s reluctance, an attitude which was not generally known. Graziano the killer, Robinson the brilliant, punishing boxer, & study in contrasts which never fails to appeal. Even then Graziano, at his peak, would have had scant chance because of shaky confidence and limited equipment, but the evidence described him as a murderous puncher and the evidence was valid since he could tear, your head off with his right. That's all he had, a righthand punch. Like so many youngsters you see around today he never improved. Either he wasn't taught or he couldn't absorb. Or maybe he was like Max Baer and scorned work. Baer was righthand cragy, too. Had he developed a left he would have been an outstanding heavyweight. Like Baer, Graziano got worse instead of better. Despite his glaring crudities, Graziano was an exciting fighter. He hod the looks and the manner and when- he hit there - wos an explosion, A form of madness possessed him once the bell rang. An animal-like fury. The subtleties of the ¢roft were not for him. Nothing less than complete obliteration was his objective.
ONE NIGHT for no reason at all other than he was in a fight and a fight meant only one thing to hifh, demolish the other guy, he grabbed Marty Servo by the neck with one hand and wildly tried to pound him into insensibility with the other and the look on his face was

terrifying. This was not la boxe at its prettiest and it shocked a number of people quite properly, but Graziano’s jungle rages knew no discipline. As I say, once the bell rang the urge to destroy was all consuming. The Rock will never be remembered as a great fighter but we've had few in our time who turned in more thrill ing fights or produced more melodrama. He was a home run hitter. No mattér how far he was behind it was never prudent to walk ‘out on him. There was always a chance he'd hreak up the game in the last half of the ninth. This he often did. I saw him the night he knocked out Harold Green, a pretty good fighter, in the 10th round, yet lost the decision, - He had taken a steady beating up to the moment he connected with a right to Green's chin. There was no question about the finality of the punch. Green had to be carried to his corner. But the knockout had come with less tian 10 seconds left in the last round, so it didn't count. The Rock will be fighting Robinson in the same ring where he made his last great fight This was in ‘47 against Tony Zale when he rewrote the script and came from behind himself fo win by a knockout in six. | hadn't thought Graziano particularly game but he made me ashamed | hod ever doubted his courage, for thet night, cut, hurt, blind in one eye and outclassed as oa craftsman, he was as brave and resolute and prideful as any fighter | ever saw.
THE ROCK always had an inferiority complex with |
respect to Robinson, and understantably so, and though he can still throw the hard right and is two years younger than the Negro stylist he figures to have no more than an outside chance at best. I suppose he'll make an all out effort in a larceny-frée operation but his main interest is in what the boys call 4 pay day and he'll go into the ring prépared to take a beating to get it. Robinson has seen his best days, too, and is ready to be taken, but, along with what remains of his skills, he still has ambition and money goals. He has a big outdoor fight coming up with Joe Maxim for the light heivyweight championship and you can be sure he isn't going to make any mistake against Graziano, not the kind that comes of carelessness or indifférence, anyway. He'll probably go for a knockout.

poor road récord and its regular season play against Providence all gave Reds Coach Terry Reardon plenty of hope in the best-of-seven series. # ” » PROVIDENUE LOST two straight to Cleveland, the defending cup champion, in the first round and then made the best comeback in the team’s history by eliminating the Barons with three straight triumphs. The Reds started the same way against the Hornets, dropping the first two games in Pittsburgh, “There’s no reason we can't do the same thing to Pittsburgh that we did te Cleveland,” Reardon sald, and the Reds backed him| _ by winning the third game here Sunday night, 5-1. The Hornets have been weak on enemy ice, but almost unbeatable at Home, and Providence wants tonight's game because the teams rettirn to Pittsburgh Thursday night for the fifth game.
