It’s Soon Fan Time

By HUBBARD COBB

Our dog has started to shed and that usually means that it's getting warmer. It will continue to get warmer until it gets hot and maybe even much hotter. All of which gets us around to the subject of exhaust fans. These fans are usually referred to as attic fans but as they can also be mounted in the basement we just call 'em exhaust fans. They make the house more comfortable dur-

ing the hot weather by pulling the

hot air out of the house so that! the cooler outside air can enter and they make you feel more comfortable by keeping the air in| circulation.

To be effective, these fans must be the right size. The size of a fan is determined by the

number of cubic feet of air it can |

move in a minute, If a fan is listed as 5000 CFM that means, that the fan can move 5000 cubic] feet of air every minute. To find! the cubic content of your house, multiply the width by the height and by the length of each room and add 'em all together, The next thing to decide is how| many times in a minute do you! want the air in your house to be changed. In the northern states the usual rule is to have a fan, that will change the air once in! every three minutes. In the, warmer states they like a fan that will do the job in two minutes and in the South where it can get pretty warm at times they go! for a fan that will do the job once ‘every minute.

Protection From Spilled Paint

Last summer a certain reader spent 15 minutes painting the outside of a window frame and three months trying to remove the paint from places where it wasn’t supposed to go. fact that it's just as easy to spill outside paint as inside paint. You will find the removing of paint from grass, shrubs, masonry and roof shingles, to be a very tedious job. You will also find that it's almost impossible for anyone, prfoessional or amateur, to paint for very long without apilling or dripping some paint about. So before you do any outside painting, be sure that adjoining surfaces and nearby objects are adquately protected. The best material for this job is a large canvas drop cloth. This can be hung on adjoining surfaces or placed over objects that are to be kept free of paint. If you don’t have one of these cloths, use several layers of old paper. If, in spite of all troubles, some paint gets where it doesn’t belong, get after it immediately with a cloth and turpentine. Fresh paint can be removed from almost any surface easily enough if it’s done right away. But if you let the paint soak in for any length of time or harden, you have a full time job on your hands. This is

especially true of masonry sur-!

faces such as brick, concrete, asbestos shingles and stucco.

Miscellaneous

When you have to saw through very gummy wood, try wiping the blade of the saw down with #& little turpentine from time to time.

This softens up the gums and

makes the saw cut more easily.
