Broadcasting

* | Good Friday Rite

By United Press

ROME, Apr. 11-—The Vatican Radio fof the first time prepared to broadcast to the world Christ's “Seven Last

Words” during his crucifixion as the world's 400 million Roman Catholics observed Good Friday services.

The crucifixion and death of Christ nearly 2000 years ago— traditionally the most solemn and sorrowful day in the Church's liturgy-—was marked by fasting, abstinence and penance. Symbolically, skies in Rome were overcast as the faithful held processions and prayers in the basilicas and churches. His Holiness Pope Pius XII did not take part in any of the ceremonies. He remained in his private chapel in the Vatican palace for prayer and meditation. Two services were held at the great basilica of 8t. Peter in Vatican City — morning mass and an evening “Tenebrae” consisting of mournful chants and psalms. Thousands of pligrims were here from over the world, and many of them heard the Giulia Vatican choir during the services. Bacred relics of Christ's passion and crucifixion were displayed to the: faithful in St. Peter's and other churches. These included a piece of the true cross on which the crucifixion took place and thorns from the crown of thorns worn by Christ.

The devout made their way solemnly out of the secluded Garden of Gethsemane, past the olive trees under which Judas bétrayed his Master, to the site of the hall where Christ was condémned to death. Then they went along the Way of the Cross to the Holy Sepulchre ; the holy women found the stone pulled away on that first Easter Sunday morning almost 2000 years ago.
