A Four-Card Suit Doesn't Always Warrant a Bid
HE bidding of today’s hand illustrates another reason for not making a one over one response on a weak four-card
suit. When his partner opened the bidding with one club, Mr, Dale did not respond in his only four-card suit, spades. This was not because the suit was not strong enough. Four to the . king meets the requirements for a biddable suit, with a

little to spare. Mr. Dale merely figured that he had a better bid available— two no trump. This single bid gave an accurate general description of his holding . a balanced hand, with no long suit, with ten-ace holdings that needed leading up to and enough strength over all to warrant a Jump.
ANOTHER advantage of the jump to two no trump is that it often puts the enemy on the spot for a good opening lead. To put it the other way, a series of “beautiful approach bids” by you and partner usually.gives your opponents a blueprint of your combined holding so that a child could pick out your most vulnerable spot. It didn’t make any difference which hand played today’s contract, although the making of nine tricks from either side took thoughtful play. Mrs. Keen opened the six of diamonds and Mr. Abel put up the queen. Mr. Dale lost no time in playing the seven spot. A diamond was returned and now

there was no possible way to defeat the contract.
” ” . MR. DALE'S king and jack stopped the suit and later, when the club finesse lost to the king, Mr. Abel had no diamonds left —and no other means of reaching his partner's hand.
If Mr. Dale had won the first trick with the king of diamonds he wouldn't have made even two no trump. He would have had to try the élub finesse and when that failed a diamond lead through his pack up to the aceten would have enabled Mrs. Keen to run five tricks in the suit for down two.

Our family, like many other families, makes a big affair When the youngsters were younger hiding Easter eggs was a big part of Easter Sunday, and on rainy |. spring days we had the hunt indoors. It seemed that there were never enough baskets available, so we often made extra ones from sections of cereal boxes. Often more attractive baskets can be made than you can buy, and so ine expensive too! - Round cereal boxes are especially well suited for basket making. One box with the lid glued back on can be cut in The edges can be scalloped or cut saw tooth fashion, and a cardboard strip makes a handle to complete the basket shape. Square boxes can be cut with the handle tabs left on as shown, and a pretty ‘pencil goes through the tabs to complete the handle.
