‘Circle Players Score New Hit
in April, 1951.
By HENRY BUTLER The Circle Players’ anniversary production of “Born Yesterday” is even better than their original production
In the year since these arena-style players started their
lively career, they've learned a lot about staging. They've gained confidence from!
-audience support. Word gets:
around. And though the Circle group have Kindly quoted press comments in the souvenir program of their anniversary show, the press, in all honesty, will have to speak right back and say the players
|
themselves built their success, |
that. success has been rugged (honesty. These players have had ithe courage to tackle grim mate(rial, profanity, bawdy. remarks and other unsavory components
of the world we live in. As a result, their work seems more vital and moving than that of groups constantly subject to censorship or the nervous qualms of com-
mittees,

important ingredient of This is adult theater. And that
fact last night again was evident (from the moment ‘the arena {lights went up in the Antlers {Hotel ballroom. “Born Yesterday” would be given no Fauntleroy treatment, It wasn’t. Parts of the first act had more power than the touring {company showed in their Murat |performance of “Born. Yesterday” a couple of seasons ago.
Shirley a Knockout
| Those of us who had seen the {Circle's “Born Yesterday’ last April knew Shirley Anderson would again be a knockout in the Billie Dawn role. What we were not prepared for was Earl Harris \as Harry Brock. Mr. Harris generates a terrific amount of ornery-goonish energy ‘as the semi-literate, racketeering, | junk = dealing, senator-fixing | Washington visitor. He incar{nates and loudly proclaims crude,
laggressive greed. He makes himself look and act like a bull-|-
headed big-mouth, and does it so
§iwell as to be not only comlfecal, ‘but also frightening.
This takes a lot of energy. Face to face with Miss Anderson, talking valiantly in Billie Dawn's shrill, nasal Brooklynese, Mr. Harris seemed a bit overpowering. And I suspect one reason for
the slackening of pace in the
Harry-Billie verbal duel of Act II was insufficient rehearsing. Director Douglas Conrod, having to step into the Paul Verrall role at the last minute, may have been pressed for time.
Put Life Into Comedy
But whenever Mr, Harris or something profane or earthy, it sounded real. They were people, not just amateur actors, With their excellent co-workers, they put new life into Garson Kanin's comedy.’ The entire cast is good. Besides Mr. Conrod as an excellent Paul Robert Cook (Senator res) and Helen Morton (Mrs, edgesS do fine work. James McDaniel, veteran of last year's production, as. the alcoholic lawyer and fixer for the profiteer, is again
{ convincing. William H, Cook is a (good Eddie Brock. An unsung heroine was the lady
who sat directly across the arena from us, When Miss Anderson was being browbeaten by Mr.
{Harris into signing some docu-
ment, the lady said quite audibly, “Don’t sign it!” Miss Anderson’s subsequent emotion was not entirely the grief she was supposed-to portray. “Born Yesterday” will continue nightly through Sunday.
