Hornets Gun For First AL Hockey Title
The Pittsburgh Hornets, gunning for their first American Hockey League championship,
tangle with the injury-riddled Providence Reds at Duquesne Gardens tonight in the opening ame of the best.of-seven game Ider Cup playoffs. Coach King Clancy, who kept the Hornets on top of the league's Western Division throughout the regular season, was confident his skaters would go on to capture their first trophy in 18 years of competition, # . ¥ “WE'RE ALL in pretty good shape for the opener,” Clancy reported after conducting final tyneup drills at nearby Johnstown, Pa. “Frank Mathers still is a
little tender around his eye, but|
he'll see plenty of action.” Mathers, a star defenseman for the Wasps, was gashed under the left eye by a skate during a practice session last Friday, However, he has responded to treatment and is expected to be used freely. . Two other Hornets injured in the playoff series with Hershey, Leo Boivin and Phil Maloney, are Back in harness and set for tonight's conteset.
BUT PROVIDENCE Coach Terry Reardon wasn't so happy Sve his squad's physical condin. There was a definite possibility that ace Right-Winger Zellio Toppazzini may be on the sidelines. Toppaasini suffered a muscle sprain in his shoulder last week a a playoff tilt against Cincin. nati. Moreover, Barry Sullivan was nursing a bad knee and a broken foe on his left foqt. Pat Egan had a banged up knee cap and Art Miculak was troubled by a pulled leg muscle.
