It doesn't pretend to cover the roster of contemporary American composers as compre as Claire Reis did in her 1 SERS IN AMERICA (rev, ed., Macmillan, 1947). Mrs, Reis contrived to get nearly 400 composers into the same number of pages—a very difficult task of compressing and editing. Mrs. Goss has allotted much more space to her passenger list: 14 pages each for Ives and John Alden Carpenter, 21 pages for an especially active and interesting composer like Roy Harris, six pages for young Mr. Bergsma. Besides blographical material, Mrs. Goss also includes what she learned from each composer, barring Mr. Ives, who was ill at the time, in interviews. She cites well known critics both for and against the more controversial of her composers. She includes a photo of each writer, an example of his manuscript,. a chronology of his career and a list of his works. The plot in Stuart Engstrand’s new novel, A HUSBAND IN THE HOUSE, is a quadrangle, rather than a triangle. It involves a ‘father and two brothers in fatal competition for a beautiful farm girl, Laura. Sven is a widower with an unreasoning love for his daughter, Carl Hedman, a neighboring farmer, and Laura, decide to marry in spite of Sven's objections. By Sven's action, Carl is hopelessly crippled the day before his wedding. The wedding, in name only, is consummated when Carl returns from the hospital. Carl's brother agrees to stay home from college and run the farm. That's when the plot thickens. Besides the plot, the book offers some sensitively done passages by a very competent writer.
