Make You a Good Player
Bridge is not, and (I hope) never will be, an exact science. Reading text books on the game will help you, but you can read them all and you will still have hands dealt to you where good
judgment is your only
guide. What would you do with Mr.

partner opened the bidwith one heart. The books say Mr. Dale's hand is too strong to pass, so that's out.’ The books also say he shouldn't bid one spade because his spade suit is not strong enough to qualify as biddable.
» » » NEITHER can he bid two clubs or two diamonds because his hand, in general, is not strong enough for a two-over-‘one response. A bid of one no-trump, with a weak singleton in his partner's suit, is regarded as unthinkable by expert players. What Is he supposed to do, then? The answer is, of course, that Mr, Dale has no good bid at all, no comfortable bid, no bid which does not run some chance of misleading partner. He has
Mrs, Keen
- only a choice of bad bids...
and_ that is where the good judgment comes in. He must choose the “bad” bid which is LEAST likely to mislead partner and therefor least likely to land the partnership in an unmakeable contract.

I THINK Mr. Dale made the best choice. He bid one spade on his slightly shaded spade suit. If Mrs. Keen rebid two heart, he would pass. If she rebid two clubs or two diamonds, he would pass. If she raised to two spades, he would take his chances, there. If she
bid three spades or three hearts, he would try three no trump.
Mrs. Keen's actual rebid was two diamonds, which became the final contract and was made with an overtrick. In deciding on the -one spade response, Mr. Dale’s reasoning went something like this: It's better to lie a little about your suit than to lie about the overall strength of your hand.
