Dr. W.K. Hatt Of Purdue Dead at 83

Dr, William Kendrick Hatt, founder and former head of Purdue University School of Civil Engineering, will be buried in Lafayette tomorrow after 3 p, m. services in St. John's Episcopal Church there, Interment will be in Springvale Cemetery. r. . Hatt died Tuesday in Birmingham, Mich, , was 83. e was the father of Maj. Kendrick A. Hatt of 2311 N, Lesley! Ave, t Dr. Hatt was Indiana state en-! gineer, 1921-1939, He and the late Col. Richard Lieber of Indianapolis are credited with setting up Indiana’s park system, Dr. Hatt was consulting engineer for the World War Memorial here, and a designer of Boulder Dam, i gow Hoover Dam, Born in Frederickton, New Brunswick, Canada, Oct. 10, 1868, Dr, Hatt ‘was graduated from the University of New Brunswick. He | later received an honorary doctor of philosophy there. He was graduated as a civil engineer from Cornell University, and awarded the Fuertes Gold Medal there.

Joined Faculty in 1893

Dr. Hatt joined Purdue University faculty in 1803 and remained until retirement in 1939. Active in engineering fields in the U. 8. and abroad, he was the author of two books on engineering. Dr. Hatt served in the plans and training section of the Army General Staff in Washington, D.C. In World War I he held a reserve commission as colonel in the engineers. From the American Concrete Institute, technical society which he organized, he received a Turner Gold Medal. He belonged to the American Society of Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers and the Indiana Society of Engineers, Survivors besides the Indianapolis son are a daughter, Mrs. Dudley R. Campbell, Birmingham, Mich, another son, Dr. Robert T. Hatt, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and eight grandchildren.
