WASHINGTON, Apr. 3 — The {moon may some day be used | datly to send mensages to distant lands. It may play an important part in getting vital messages through to their destination. Shortwave radio signals come through clearly in the midst of a radio storm when the moon fis used as 4a reflector to bounce the waves back to the earth, The
earth’s upper atmosphere no longer functions as a ‘radio roof” and all signals using it are blacked out. | “It is practical to use the moon as a reflector for radio telegraph service,” reports G. F, Montgomery of the National Bureau of .|Btandard’s Central Radio Propagation Laboratory here. “But special, expensive equipment would be needed to put the
‘moon to work as a reflector,” Mr. |
Montgomery hastens to add. “A

The difficulty involved in using ithe moon as a reflector is that it must be above the horizon of both | sending and receiving stations. ! Thus there is a limited period, sometimes during the night but
ing which the moon can be used as a radio reflector. The moon, however, does not have to be visible to serve as a reflector. Rain clouds’ and dust clouds have little effect on radio! beams. A new moon would reflect these signals just as effectively

To Shed ‘Freeze’
CHICAGO, Apr. 3 (UP)—Paul (A. Walker, chairman of the Fed-
eral Communications Commission, said yesterday that the government will probably lift its “freeze” on new television stations within two weeks. The FCC will then probably allow three months for filing of applications for new stations, Mr. Walker told the concluding meeting of the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters. Mr, Walker expected 1000 new {applications. ‘He sald the FCC, {has drawn up a “comprehensive,
imaster-plan” to provide eventual-| least 2000 television]
ly for at broadcasting stations. The FCC-imposed “freeze” has lasted three and a half years.
