Waiting Bid May Help Clarify Situation Later

After his partner opend the bidding with one heart, Mr. Abel lookéd at his hand and

properly figured that he was .

too strong to bid one notrump and not quite strong R enough to bid two no-trump. Therefore he correctly decided to make the waiting ‘bid of two clubs. . This twoover -one call is forcing for

possibly Champion's rebid would clarify the situation, Mr. Champion’s rebid was two diamonds and while Mr. Abel would have preferred to hear a two spade bid, he still was justified in ng one more try with a bid of two no-trump. Mr, Cham--pion also had little left over and he went on to three. If Mr. Muzzy had held the South cards his probable first bid would be two no-trump. “I have nothing in my partner's bid and honors in all three of the other suits,” would be his reasoning. If he were asked why he didn’t respond two clubs he would answer, “I don’t want to play clubs. I- don’t think this is a “club” hand.” : The point is, of course, that when you make the correct response of two clubs you don’t by ‘any means committ your side to playing in that suit. You are merely marking time, waiting for further information. And if partner sees fit to raise clubs strongly (beyond the three notrump level) then clubs will be the best spot. Mr. Abel's bidding of this hand was better than kis play.

Mr. Meek opened the jack of spadés and Mr. Abel ducked in dummy and won with the queen. He promptly proceeded to lead the queen of diamonds and let it ride. Mrs. Keen won with the king and led back a spade, clearing the suit. Mr, Abel didn’t have nine tricks unless he won at least two clubs. So he took the club finesse. Mr. Meek won with the

king and ran the entire spade |

suit. Proper play was to take the club finesse first, If this lost, the diamond finesse could be tried later and if this lost, too, at least it would be losing to the hand that did not have the long spade hoiding. * As you see, if the hand had been played in" this manner, Mrs, Keen would have been powerless to give her partner the lead after she won with the king of diamonds.

SEW BUTTON ASTER BUNNIES

. It is Easter Bunny season again and some of you might like to do a little “rabbit” sewing. On one of these bunnies you will notice the body and costume are made of material cut out in a pattern to show ‘Peter’ out for a walk, but notice the white button eye, the large white button tail, and the little pink button nose! Get a square of cardboard and see how good a rabbit you can cut out and complete

for a wall picture.

The other bunny is a double layer of felt in the shape

-|of a rabbit head with long folded felt ears. Before sewing

the two sides together, sew on the white button eyes and the pink button nose. Now, with red material, stitch on a little red mouth and then with yarn add long whiskers and eyebrows. The two sides should be stitched 2s shown and filled with beans before it is completely closed. These make cute indoor beanbags for" hours of fun. TOMORROW-—Sock Puppets With Finger Arms.
