Sen. Dirksen Turns Blast On Truman’
U. 8. Ben. Everett McKinley Dirksen (R. Ill.) . last night charged President Truman hat led the pation down the road te war and ruin. And he ‘frankly indorsed Ohio's Robert A. Taft #8 the only Republican capable of leading the United States to a “permanent peace.” The tousle-hajred Senator, in a flery blast at Mr. Truman, ac esed him of ‘“prostituting the office of the presidency and waging a one-man war in Korea.” Handed a copy of the President's speech by The Indianap-|’ olls Times, Sen. Dirksen departed from his regular address before tuxedoed and dressed-up Inna Republicans at the Columpia Club's annual Beefsteak Dirner to attack the President. Later, when informed the Pres dent would not run for re-election, he told The Times: “The country is tulated.” “Point-by-point, 8en. Dirksen assailed the President's “message of So-called prosperity.” It was a fire and brimstone speech, loaded with quotations from the Bible find full of praise for Sen. Robert ft for President. ow L Ovation or Taft “iy, as they say, Evangelist By Sunday is “God's Grenadier,” then last night Ben. Dirkfen was “Taft's Trumpeteer.” He yeceived a standing ovation when indorsed the Ohio Senator as| e man to lead the Republi] ean Party to victory.” “#What is Truman's prosperity?” Sen. Dirksen asked, “Can Tru- { separate the corpses in Korea from the jobs in America?” + "Did his message mention that coffins were just ordered Cincinnati?” ihe Illinois Senator, atiacking, man's foreign spending, said: en we go broke, there will be no Marshall Plan for us. We gannot let the crooks and com-fle-coddlers spend us bankrupt.” ¥ Shots at Ike “In an off-the-cuff speech at a| feception in his honor earlier in the day, Sen. Dirksen took a few verbal “pot shots” at Gen. Dwight D. Kisenhower to the delight of more than 250 enthusfastic Republicans sporting red, | white and blue Taft buttons. “'®1,ike moonshine whisky there | are two kinds of candidates,” he sald. “The courtin’ kind and the fighting kind. Bob Taft is a ter.” “The few Eisenhower supporters psent stood in stunned silence. | it was not their show. One| them, rather disappointed,

The Senator said he is for Taft | against nobody. But he! added: “Taft may not be partienlarly photogenic, but I'm more concerned in the brain behind the face.” ‘He recalled, for example, the umsuccessful Republican presiThoms campaigns of Alf Landon,
mas Dewey and the late ndell Willkie and intimated that no other Republican, save Sen. Taft, could break the jinx the Democrats have held over the GOP for 20 years. ‘Sen. Dirksen's open support of Taft caused a further rift among Indiana Republicans who already are bitterly divided on who should | he the 1952 GOP standard bearer «Taft or Eisenhower.
