Blackwood on Bridge—

Your First Response to Bid Of Partner All-Important

“You bridge writers don't give the whole .story on the

“question of responding to part-

ner's opening bid of one in a suit,” complained Mrs. Keen. “You say to respond with a king and a ~couple of queens, or even a little less, but you don’t make it clear WHAT to respond.” Today's deal is another bad result suffered by Mrs. Keen in a party bridge session. The final con{ract of three clubs doubled was set two tricks for a 500point penalty. East opened the nine of diamonds and West was good enough to duck to preserve communication with her hand. As soon as East regained the lead, she led her last diamond and ruffed the diamond return with the deuce of ¢lubs. Thus, the defenders won four club tricks, a diamond and a heart. Actually, there was no excuse for getting this high on the hand. North had plenty to respond. But not enough to respond at the two range. A two-

got too frisky, they might even have bid the hand overboard and Mrs. Keen would have received ‘the penalty points, Not that the holding of a six-card suit is no bar to responding with one no-trump. Unless your partner can take strong action over that call, it is extremely improbable that you will miss a game at clubs -or anywhere, for that matter. Remember, it is. a good thing to tell partner about your

PULL ToV BLOCKS WITH COUPLINGS

Have you ever watched a little fellow play with A small boy or girl can have a lot of fun wit string tied to a piece of wood, for they imagine it is a air |automobile, or even a wagon and they are the horse. These blocks can be cut from 1x4 or 2x4 limber and can have several types of couplings for joining the “cars. Before adding the couplings the blocks should be sand-! papered or the corners filed so that they will be free of The blocks can be enameled in bright colors, too.! Screen door hooks and screw eyes make simple coup-| lings, or just staples driven into the ends of the blocks so. ‘that they can be tied together is another more simple method. Use cup hooks and rubber bands or bore holes ‘and bend U-shaped wires to fit into the holes as shown Keep them simple, and let the child!
