MIAMI, Fla, Mar. 28—The| Brooklyn Dodgers, who have been| searching frantically for a “new Don Newcombe,” hoped today, that instead they may have dis-| covered a ‘new Whitlow Wyatt”! In 30-year-old Ben Wade. Remembering that Wyatt, star of the early '40’s, didn’t reach the | majors until he was 30, the | Dodgers took great delight in the! performance by Wade yesterday as he allowed only one hit in seven innings to pace a 3 to 0 victory over the Boston Braves. 8am TJethroe's seventh-inning bunt was the only safety allowed by Wade, younger brother of former American League pitcher Jake Wade.

Yankees

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Mar. 28 — Yogi Berra, out with an ankle injury, may return to the New York Yankees’ lineup for today’s game against the Detroit Tigers. He took his first batting drill yesterday since suffering the injury. The Yankees were happy about the form shown in yesterday's 8-2 win over the Cards by Lefty Ed Lopat. For the first five innings, Lopat blanked the Cards on one hit, and then allowed one run- on three hits in the sixth. Jt was his first attempt at six innings this spring. The Tigers, who lost io the Phils yesterday, 3-2, have cut six men from their squad. They sent | Infielders Ralph Atkins, Johnny Phillips, and Al Federoff and Pitcher Dick Marlowe to Buffalo | on option and tagged Catcher] Les Pinkham and Pitcher Al Yaylian “for future assignment.”

Bl Davey Fight Agreement Only Verbal

By JIM HEYROCK

Only a verbal agreement

between Chuck Davey and the Hoosier Boxing Club bound the up-and-coming

welterweight to a May 28 appearance in the Coliseum as the Indianapolis promotion group fur-

thered - -plans. for a nationally televised fight here. After his TKO victory over Tke Williams in Chicago Stadium Wednesday night, the red-haired Davey told Bob Wormser, head of the Hoosier Boxing Club, he

would be willing to “take on anybody” bhefore the television cameras in Indianapolis. ” » n BUT THERE was still a possibility that if a suitable opponent cannot be found for Davey, the IBC will name another fighter to headline the May 28 program here. Heads of the IBC frowned on a suggestion by the Hoosier Boxing Club that Davey meet Chico Vejar, another undefeated welterweight. An official of the IBC said the Davey-Vejar hattle was being planned for Chicago Sta-

dium later, ” n nn UNDER THE verbal agreement. reached by° the IBC and

the HBC, the Indianapolis group will pay all expenses for the fight here, including rent of the Coliseum, boxers’ purses and willl keep all profit, except TV rights, from .the fight. The IBC will take the teleproceeds which would amount to about $3000 after the fighters receive their shares. Each nf the principals would collect abhout $1500 from TV.
