Wood Stains Foreshadow Coloriul House Exteriors

“THE WOOD in tomorrow's tables, chairs, bookshelves and other Pieces of furniture may come in a galaxy: of colors ranging from deep red to pale purple. This possibility arose today when the Marfin-Senour

paint company, Chicago, introduced scores of new wood stain colors to replace the traditional blondes and browns of -mahogany and walnut, Perfection of a broad palet of 350 colors to enhance the texture and design of natural wood climaxed years of re-

search to meet” demands of architects, designers, and decorators for more color in woods,

Traditionally, almost all wood has been stained brown, usually mahogany, or blonde. While certain additional colors have been made available in wood stains, the palette has been limited, just as the variety of paint colors was limited until the company introduced more than 1,000 specific tints, tones and shades In 1946.

Elaborate African Violet Show

To Be Held in Indianapolis in May

ET out your flossiest African violets, There's going to be an African violet show here in May. That much I learned this week at the meeting of the Indianapolis African Violet Club at Mrs. Chellah Shideler’'s in Brendonwood. Exact date and exact place are still in the

Until too late, that is.

“It’s just the way it is in a regular flower ter. show,” she observed. ‘People will come and look over the exhibits you've done your very best with. Then they'll say oh, they've got zinnias bigger than that at home. That's when we feel like—well, maybe I better not say what we feel

like doing to them.”

I wish all you garden column readers (except the violet haters) could have seen Mrs. Shideler’s collection of hundreds in bloom. Of course, shelves are decorated by what you put on them, but if many wide shelves hold books and nothing else the effect can be heavy and suffer from a sameness that is bettered by a change.

the small decorative shelves in satiny black or a darker shade of the bookcase color or in a bright contrasting shade. Use them to hold small decorative objects and tiny plants, The new shelf spacers lighten the bulkiness of a wide expanse of big shelves and restyle them, give them a speeial-built look. If there is a smart piece of furniture in the room that is finished in colored = lacquer, make the shelves match it for striking effect.

First Line Player Knows When to Ignore Signal

IRST COMES the player who never pays any attention to his partner's signals. Next comes the player who carefully watches his partner's plays and ALWAYS takes a high-low for a come-on and a deuce for a discouraging card. Then there is the player with hoth imagination and skill, who has the ability to recognize the situation where partner's signal must be ignored. In today's deal, South opened the king of spades and East won with the ace. North plaved the (usually) discouraging deuce—and for a very good reason. He couldn't tell whether his partner was leading from the king-queen or ace-king.

IF THE LEAD happened to be from ace-kKing, then East would hold the queen, If South were encouraged to lay down his ace, East's queen would be set up on which a diamond could be discarded from the hoard. At trick two East led the king of hearts and South won with the ace. His next play was the crucial one. North
