WEDNESDAY, MAR."

Germany Or Bust,

By United Peess GOEPPINGEN, Germany, Mar. 19 — For - most of. the

® married men In the 28th U. S.

Infantry Division, just about the most important thing in the world is getting their wives and kids over to Germany. But they find the Army pretty slow in helping. ] The-first small groups of of-Army-sponsored dependents have just begun trickling in this divisional headquarters town 25 miles east of Stuttgart {fn southwest Germany. But a lot of men have given up hope of getting their families in “through channels” —and at government expense. So, they have started doing something about it on their own. The result is a growing com-

munity of ‘‘nonofficlal depend-

their own money. . on ® 4 THE FAMILIES of some 40 men had com to Goeppingen alone. There are others scat: tered in neatby cities, towns and villages, The ‘“nonofficials” not only have to pay their own transportation, but once they get to Germany, as “tourists,” they get none of the benefits granted the official dependents: Housing, maid service, Army dependents’ commissary and post exchange privileges. Their husbands have their own PX cards of course. The worst problem is housing. In most areas of Germany, getting a permanent place to live, for a foreigner not entitled to Army-built or requisi-

tioned housing, is just about as tough as it was for Army wives * following their husbands from camp. to camp in the U. 8. during World War II. Take the case of 8/Sgt. William A. Kelly of Pittsburgh, Pa. Ld . ” BILL. ARRIVED with the division from Camp Atterbury, Ind. last December and decided he and his petite, hazel-eyed wife, Sally, hadn't heen married so long that they ought to be separated so soon. So Sally arrived in Goeppingen Jan, 1. Here's how they did it and how much it cost them: Sally's trip over, by plane, was a dream, but it cost $700, including a return ticket. Then the hunt for an apartment, nothing fancy, just a couple of roms and a bath and kitchen. * .

°

It's a joke asking for any-

thing like that in Goeppingen.

Even though the city was only slightly damaged during the war, there are thousands of refugees and bombed-out persons from other areas among its current 40,000 inhabitants” They had all signed up at the local housing office long before Bill and Sally even heard of Goeppingen. » o » ”

SO THEY wound up in‘a “gasthaus,” a combination beer parlor and restaurant with a few rooms to let upstairs.

They got one of the rooms— small and clean with beatup old furniture and a washbasin, However, there is no bath.

It cost nine marks ($2) a day the regular daily rate-—and the

a respectable hotel in a big

city. That ran to 63 marks or |

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

t affother 12 marks ($3) a day, including Bill's supper. Total monthly rate, 630 marks ($150). This is twice the average German's monthly wage, but is cheaper than it would be in the states, and is not too tough on a" staff sergeant's pay. ; And Sally got used to sponge baths and an occasional trip to the Goeppingen public baths. ~ = ” BUT A COUPLE .of weeks ago Bill and Sally hit it lucky. They heard of a room for rent in an apartment in a brandnew project, and they got it. Hermann Aignor, an trician, had been in a hospital for four months trying to save his eyesight, and his wife decided she needed the money. The new room costs Bill and Sally 80 marks ($20) a month, with bathroom and kitchen

privileges, and they: can buy all the food ‘they can eat for

another $50 which isn't a bad

deal,

All of which is why-—as long |

as the Army limits its care and comfort to the wives and kids of men who are (1) officers or noncoms in the three highest grades, and (2) scheduled to be in Germany at least one year after the arrival of their dependents — Army

wives will continue to come to

Germany as “tourists.”

NEW YORK, Mar. 19—A vice syndicate went out of business today because it made the mis-| take of showing obscene movies secretly at a Bronx high school. | The multi-million dollar ring| was smashed last night when| more than 300 plainclothesmen | began raiding stag shows, pho-| tographic studios and private | apartments throughout the city. i About 100 persons, including | i stag show spectators, were taken | to Bronx District Attorney George | B. Deluca’s office for questioning. ! Among them were women who! performed in the nude at the smokers. A spokesman for Mr. Deluca said the roundup would continue throughout the day. i The vice squad began working on the case about three weeks ago when the parents of a Bronx high school student told police lewd films had been shown pupils at a secret prevue in the building. During the raids plainclothesmen confiscated more than 500 obscene movies, thousands of objectionable comic books and numerous pornographic devices. Detectives sald movies were rented at high fees to.individuals or private groups who, in turn, charged high “admission” prices. Some of the private apartments were used as storerooms for films and indecent photographs peddled by the ring, the district attorney's office said.
